Hong Kong’s high-speed rail will expand its connections to mainland China with 16 new destinations starting January 26, the city’s railway operator MTR announced on January 11. The expansion will make travel between Hong Kong and popular mainland cities easier and more convenient.
The new destinations include major tourist and business hubs, such as Nanjing and Wuxi in Jiangsu Province, and Hefei in Anhui Province. With this expansion, the total number of direct-access destinations from West Kowloon Station in Hong Kong will reach 110, MTR said.
Additionally, the Shanghai Hongqiao sleeper train service will expand from operating only on Fridays and Mondays to daily departures. Other routes, including trains to and from Guangzhounan Station, will see increased frequency to accommodate growing passenger demand.
Ms. Jeny Yeung, chief executive of MTR, said the company has worked closely with both the Hong Kong SAR government and mainland railway authorities to continuously enhance cross-boundary travel services. She highlighted that adding new destinations will not only make travel easier for passengers but also unlock economic opportunities linked to high-speed rail and support national development.
The expansion is part of a broader effort to improve transport links between Hong Kong and mainland China, supporting tourism, business, and trade. MTR officials said the upgraded services aim to provide passengers with a faster, more efficient, and more reliable travel experience across the region.
Passengers traveling from Hong Kong can now access a wider range of destinations directly, reducing the need for transfers and making long-distance trips more convenient. The daily Shanghai sleeper train upgrade also offers added flexibility for travelers, particularly for business and leisure trips.
Officials emphasized that these service enhancements reflect ongoing collaboration between Hong Kong and mainland authorities to strengthen regional connectivity. The move is expected to boost cross-border tourism and business activity, providing further economic benefits for both Hong Kong and the mainland.
With 16 new destinations and increased train frequencies, Hong Kong’s high-speed rail network continues to evolve as a critical transport link connecting the city with China’s key economic and cultural centers. Passengers can expect smoother travel options, reduced travel times, and enhanced comfort across the network.
The expansion of the Hong Kong high-speed rail underscores the importance of modern rail infrastructure in supporting regional integration and long-term economic growth. Travelers can look forward to a more connected and accessible rail network starting January 26.
