Lando Norris won the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, edging out Max Verstappen in a thrilling, rain-soaked race. Norris, who started from pole position, kept his cool despite the wet conditions and multiple safety car periods. Verstappen finished in second, with Mercedes driver George Russell taking third.
The season-opening race, held at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, was chaotic from the start. Heavy rain made the track slippery, leading to accidents and forcing a series of safety car deployments. Three drivers failed to finish the first lap due to crashes, including last year’s winner Carlos Sainz.
A Wild Start in Melbourne
The rain made the track dangerous, with drivers struggling to maintain control. Isack Hadjar, Jack Doohan, and Carlos Sainz all crashed out before the first lap was completed. Hadjar’s accident on the formation lap delayed the start, but when the race began, Norris made a clean jump off the line and held his lead.
Verstappen quickly moved up to second, passing Oscar Piastri, while Charles Leclerc climbed two places to fifth. However, the race was soon interrupted by further accidents. Doohan crashed into the wall, followed by Sainz, bringing out the safety car.
Verstappen’s Mistake and Norris’ Strong Lead
After the restart, Norris built a solid lead. By lap 13, he was 8 seconds ahead of Russell in fourth. Verstappen, in second, made a rare mistake on lap 18, brushing the gravel and losing position to Piastri. Norris and Piastri then stretched their lead to 18 seconds over Verstappen.
But the race wasn’t over. On lap 34, Fernando Alonso crashed, triggering another safety car. This allowed teams to pit, with Norris and Piastri switching to hard tires, while Verstappen chose medium tires.
Norris Holds Off Verstappen for Victory
When the race restarted, Norris maintained his lead. Verstappen pushed hard but couldn’t get past the Briton. With seven laps to go, Red Bull’s Liam Lawson spun off, causing another safety car period. After the restart, Norris kept his calm and crossed the finish line to win by less than a second.
“It was an amazing race, especially with Max behind me,” Norris said. “The last two laps were stressful, but I managed to hold on and win.”
Verstappen and Russell Reflect on the Race
Verstappen, aiming for his fifth consecutive world title, was disappointed with second place but content with the points. “It was a tough race, but I had fun fighting for the win,” he said. “It’s a good start to the season.”
Russell, who finished third, was happy with his result. “P3 is great considering how chaotic the race was,” he said. “When you’re in the lead, it’s tough, but I was hoping the drivers ahead would make a mistake.”
Other Notable Performances
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli impressed on his debut, finishing in fourth place. Williams’ Alex Albon also had a strong race, securing fifth. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll finished in sixth, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took eighth. Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri and Lewis Hamilton completed the top 10.
Norris Solidifies His Status as Title Contender
With this win, Lando Norris strengthens his position as a key contender for the 2025 Formula 1 title. The race showed that the season will be full of surprises, with Verstappen, Norris, and other top drivers set to battle it out in future races.
