Deputy President Paul Mashatile urged African leaders to unite for a stronger, fairer, and more stable future. He spoke at the T20 Africa High-Level Dialogue held on Tuesday at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria, South Africa. The event focused on the theme “Strengthening African Agency in the G20 Within the Global Order.”
Mashatile highlighted the dangers of rising global tension and weakening cooperation. He said that fair, inclusive systems are key for global and African stability.
Multilateralism Under Threat
Mashatile warned against ignoring or weakening international cooperation. “We should take a dim view and strongly discourage the erosion of multilateralism, as it poses a potential threat to global growth and stability,” he said.
He noted that fair global systems support long-term economic growth. Without them, African economies may face more instability.
Rising Costs and Economic Pressure
The deputy president also pointed to trade tensions that are raising the cost of living. He said prices for manufactured goods are going up. This could slow down Africa’s already weak economic growth.
“It is necessary that we respond collectively and decisively as Africans while increasing capacity and capability to reduce dependency,” Mashatile added.
He called for more local production and shared strategies to manage future challenges.
Africa Must Build on Its Own Legacy
Mashatile reminded the audience of Africa’s founding leaders. He said their dreams of a united and independent continent must be kept alive.
“To make Africa great and attain complete political and economic independence, we must pick up where they left off,” he said.
He stressed the need to work together and to build strong institutions across the continent.
G20-AU Collaboration Is Essential
Mashatile also focused on peace and security. He called for closer work between the African Union (AU) and the G20 group. He said this could help fund peace efforts, including the Silencing the Guns initiative.
He said, “South Africa has demonstrated a strong commitment in its foreign policy by advocating for principles such as justice, solidarity, equality, peace, and respect, all grounded in its dedication to human dignity.”
South Africa to Host G20 Summit
South Africa will host the G20 conference later this year. Mashatile said the country would use the event to push for fairer global financial rules.
He called for better credit rating systems and easier access to climate financing. He also asked for serious debt relief for poor countries.
The upcoming G20 Presidency of South Africa will focus on helping nations with low income deal with global challenges more fairly and effectively.
Looking Ahead
Mashatile’s speech made clear that Africa must speak with one voice. He believes the continent can shape global policies that match African needs.
The T20 Africa High-Level Dialogue is part of a larger push to give Africa more power in shaping global systems.
Closing Statement
Unity, fairness, and action were the key messages from Deputy President Paul Mashatile. As Africa prepares for a greater role in global affairs, strong leadership and cooperation will be essential.
