New Zealand’s Pounamu Tourism Group has taken a major step in growing its tourism business by acquiring Leisure Tours, a well-established tour operator with over 30 years of experience. The deal, valued at several million dollars, was finalized on July 1, 2025.
Leisure Tours, formerly known as Canterbury Leisure Tours, has offered more than 75 different tours over its 32-year history. The company serves over 10,000 travelers each year, providing a wide variety of tours across New Zealand and Australia. It also specializes in shore excursions for cruise ship passengers.
Paul Jackson, Managing Director of Pounamu Tourism Group, said the acquisition will help the company expand beyond its strong rail tourism focus. “Leisure Tours brings a wide range of destinations and skilled staff that fit well with our existing services,” Jackson said. Pounamu Tourism Group currently handles more than 30,000 passengers annually on its rail tours, including well-known brands such as the Marlborough Flyer, The Whale Train, Sir Edmund Hillary Explorer, and The Mountaineer.
Jackson added that Leisure Tours will keep its brand and operations separate but will complement the group’s broader tourism offerings. This strategic move is part of a larger plan to diversify and grow Pounamu Tourism Group’s portfolio.
Kevin Edlin, the founder of Leisure Tours, will stay on as a consultant to support a smooth transition. Edlin expressed confidence in the new ownership. “When you own a business, you put your heart into it,” he said. “It was important to find a successor who shares the same passion and respect for the industry. Pounamu Tourism Group is known for quality service and pride in showcasing New Zealand. I look forward to seeing Leisure Tours thrive under their leadership.”
As part of the growth strategy, Greg Cayford has been named the new General Manager of Leisure Tours. Cayford brings strong leadership experience from his previous role as Chief Executive of Cycle Journeys. Inside the group, Dale Coulter has been promoted to General Manager of Group Operations for Pounamu Tourism Group. Coulter’s role focuses on growing the operations team and maintaining best practices as the company handles more travelers.
Jackson described these leadership changes as vital steps in supporting the company’s expanding tour portfolio. “We are confident in the team we have in place to grow our business and explore new opportunities,” he said.
Leisure Tours continues to be a key player in New Zealand’s tourism industry, known for its wide selection of tours both within the country and in Australia. The company also holds a strong position in providing cruise ship shore excursions, a growing market segment.
This acquisition marks a significant development for Pounamu Tourism Group, moving from a mostly rail-based tour company to a more diverse tourism provider with a wider range of travel experiences. With solid leadership and a clear growth plan, the group is positioned to serve more travelers and offer more varied tours across the region.
