Seplat Energy has empowered 50 journalists through an intensive media entrepreneurship training programme. The initiative focused on enhancing business skills, leadership, and management abilities. It targeted professionals reporting on the capital market, judiciary, finance, and business sectors.

The training was held in partnership with ELOH Consulting Limited. It brought together reporters from across print, digital, and broadcast platforms. The goal was to equip them with practical tools for building sustainable business ventures in the evolving media space.

The journalists gained a deeper understanding of business planning, leadership skills, and strategic thinking. The programme was designed to help them thrive not only in journalism but also as business owners and future leaders.

In the opening remarks, Stanley Opara, Seplat Energy’s corporate communications manager, explained the broader goals of the programme. Representing Chioma Afe, the company’s director of external affairs and social performance, he said the initiative aims to build strong entrepreneurial capacity among media professionals. He added that the training prepares them for higher responsibilities in the changing business world.

A unique aspect of the programme was the inclusion of key figures from anti-corruption and security agencies. These experts interacted with journalists to expand their knowledge of Nigeria’s governance systems and law enforcement operations. Discussions covered corruption, intelligence processes, and legal frameworks that shape national security.

Participants also had the opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals and industry leaders. Professor Pat Utomi, a respected academic and business thinker, delivered a key session. He discussed whether professionals like journalists can successfully transition into entrepreneurship. His insights helped participants understand the mindset and skills required to build thriving businesses.

Dr. Solomon Avbioroko, a former Coca-Cola International director and faculty member at Lagos Business School, shared his knowledge on entrepreneurship and business management. He stressed the importance of discipline, innovation, and strategic thinking in running a business.

Olu Onakoya, once the managing director at Mobil Nigeria, provided expert insights on leadership and corporate governance. He emphasized integrity and long-term planning as core elements of business success.

Other trainers included Nnamdi Uwaemelulam, who spoke on media technology. He encouraged journalists to embrace digital tools for content creation and distribution. Uloma Okoro focused her session on creating business models and writing effective business plans. Her session offered a practical framework for participants to turn their ideas into sustainable ventures.

Journalists attending the training praised the programme for its structure, depth, and relevance. They said it offered real-world tools to adapt to the fast-changing media landscape. Many appreciated the chance to connect with business leaders and gain skills outside traditional journalism.

Beyond technical knowledge, the programme also served as a platform to build networks among journalists, mentors, and industry stakeholders. This collaborative environment created a space for innovation and fresh ideas.

Seplat Energy’s commitment to professional development in the media industry was clear throughout the event. The company has taken a bold step by supporting media entrepreneurship and creating pathways for journalists to expand their careers.

This initiative reflects a growing trend where journalists are encouraged to think beyond reporting and build long-term value through business and innovation. Seplat’s effort sets a new benchmark for corporate involvement in media development.

The media entrepreneurship training will likely inspire similar efforts in the future, as more organizations recognize the value of investing in journalistic growth and sustainability.
