South Korea’s newly elected President Lee Jae-myung has pledged to open talks with North Korea while also building stronger relationships with the United States and Japan. He made the statements during his first speech as president, promising a balanced and practical approach to diplomacy and security.
Lee took office just hours after winning a snap election in May. The vote followed the removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was ousted in April after declaring martial law during civil unrest last year.
During his inaugural address at the National Assembly in Seoul, Lee said South Korea would use strong defense measures to deter any threats from North Korea. But he also promised to reopen communication with the North and work for peace through cooperation and dialogue. He said South Korea would establish peace on the Korean Peninsula through talks and cooperation while maintaining strong deterrence with the help of the alliance with the United States.
Lee also pledged to strengthen the three-way partnership between South Korea, the U.S., and Japan, a move welcomed by both Washington and Tokyo.
He said he will follow a policy based on national interests rather than ideology. Lee emphasized the need to respond to global changes in economics and security with practical decisions. He said pragmatic diplomacy based on national interests will help turn current global crises into opportunities.
Though some have criticized Lee in the past for being too friendly toward China and North Korea, he has recently shown more support for the South Korea-U.S. alliance. His recent statements have avoided controversy and stressed cooperation with the West.
Some analysts are watching to see how Lee will handle difficult decisions related to foreign policy. They say it is uncertain how he will act with the U.S., Japan, North Korea, or China, since his past positions have changed often. There could be tension if his government does not follow Washington’s approach.
President Lee faces major challenges. One is dealing with U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs, which have affected South Korea’s exports. Another is North Korea’s growing military ties with Russia. North Korea has reportedly sent weapons and troops to help Russia in its war in Ukraine. Experts believe no South Korean leader can easily solve these problems. However, Lee’s willingness to reopen dialogue with the North could lead to progress if both sides agree to talk.
The United States and Japan quickly welcomed Lee’s election. Both countries said they were ready to work with him to strengthen cooperation. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said he hopes to meet President Lee soon to improve ties between their nations. The U.S. State Department said South Korea and the U.S. continue to have a strong alliance.
China also reacted positively. President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message, saying China wants to deepen its partnership with South Korea. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV shared Xi’s message, which expressed hope for continued cooperation between the two countries.
It remains unclear how North Korea will respond to Lee’s offer for talks. The North has avoided communication with South Korea and the U.S. since 2019. In recent years, Pyongyang has supported Russia militarily, and experts suspect Russia may be helping North Korea upgrade its nuclear weapons program. This has raised concerns in Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo. Any future talks between South and North Korea will likely depend on international efforts to manage these new threats.
Lee’s presidency may bring a new chapter in Korean diplomacy. While the risks remain high, his balanced message of peace and strength has created cautious optimism. If he can manage both dialogue and defense effectively, his five-year term could shape the future of security in East Asia.
