Columbia City, Indiana, is a vibrant small town just 21 miles from Fort Wayne, offering visitors the perfect mix of quiet charm, nature, and lively events. With a population just over 10,000, it provides a peaceful escape while keeping big-city conveniences within easy reach.

Accessibility is straightforward. U.S. Route 30, State Road 205, and State Road 9 all run through town, and Fort Wayne International Airport is just a 42-minute drive away. Public transportation options are limited, so renting a car is recommended. While the town itself isn’t the most walkable, its historic downtown is pedestrian-friendly and packed with attractions.

Downtown Columbia City comes alive with events year-round, from walking tours and flower crawls to open houses and movie nights. The Whitley County Historical Museum is a must-visit, open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering insight into the life of Thomas Marshall, the 28th Vice President of the U.S., and Whitley County’s rich history. Entrance is free, and knowledgeable guides enhance the experience.

For dining, The Square is a popular choice. This classic American restaurant features steaks, chicken, tuna, and a salad bar, with meals typically costing between $10 and $20. The cozy atmosphere and well-reviewed drinks make it a favorite for locals and visitors alike. The Square is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on weekends, it opens at 10 a.m.

For day trips, Albion, known as the “Gateway to the Chain O’Lakes,” is less than 18 miles away and offers a charming downtown. Markle, another nearby riverside town, features quaint shops and disc golf greens, perfect for a relaxing afternoon.

Nature lovers will find Columbia City especially appealing. The Evelyn and Wendell Dygert Nature Preserve is only a 10-minute drive from town, with scenic trails along the Blue Babe Branch stream. Visitors can see spring wildflowers, watch birds like hawks and owls, and enjoy the beauty of hickory, cherry, beech, and maple trees.

Crooked Lake Nature Preserve is another nearby gem, located just 12 minutes away. Set on one of Indiana’s deepest and cleanest lakes, it’s ideal for walking, birdwatching, and exploring tree-filled trails. While some paths are challenging and seating is limited, the preserve is a must-see for outdoor enthusiasts.

For a longer excursion, Angola is about 50 minutes away and offers a lakeside retreat with hidden trails and parks. Ouabache State Park, just over an hour’s drive, is perfect for escaping Fort Wayne’s urban bustle. Visitors can enjoy scenic trails, observe wildlife, and spot bison in the park.

Columbia City combines small-town charm with vibrant events and natural beauty, making it a top choice for a day trip or a longer staycation near Fort Wayne. From downtown activities to serene nature preserves, this Indiana town offers something for every traveler.
