Colorado authorities have confirmed that journalist Hunter S Thompson’s 2005 death was a suicide, reaffirming the findings of the original investigation. The announcement followed a review prompted by concerns raised by Thompson’s wife, Anita Thompson.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted the review after Anita Thompson contacted authorities with “new concerns and potential information” regarding the circumstances of her husband’s death. The agency released a statement Friday confirming that the original conclusion of suicide remains valid.

In response to the confirmation, Anita Thompson expressed gratitude for the CBI’s work. She said the review “allows all of us who loved Hunter to move forward with a clean conscience,” highlighting the family’s relief at the resolution.

Hunter S Thompson, 67 at the time of his death, was a pioneering journalist who popularized gonzo journalism, a first-person style blending reporting and personal experience. He is best known for works such as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which explored American culture with satirical and immersive storytelling.

Thompson died at his home in the Aspen area of Colorado in February 2005. In accordance with his wishes, his remains were cremated and fired from a cannon during a private ceremony. Among the attendees was actor Johnny Depp, who portrayed Thompson in the 1998 film adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Aspen-area Sheriff Michael Buglione noted that the original investigation was properly conducted but acknowledged the importance of the independent review. He said the CBI’s findings “reaffirm the original findings and, we hope, provide reassurance and clarity” to those close to Thompson.

The review provides closure to long-standing questions about the circumstances of Thompson’s death. Officials emphasized that the independent assessment confirms the thoroughness and accuracy of the initial investigation, offering clarity to fans and family alike.

Thompson’s legacy continues to influence journalism and literature. His unique style of immersive storytelling and fearless critique of social and political life has left an enduring mark on media and culture.

The CBI’s confirmation ensures that Thompson’s death will be officially recorded as a suicide, putting an end to speculation and highlighting the importance of careful review in high-profile cases.

The investigation also underscores the role of families in seeking clarity for unresolved questions. Anita Thompson’s initiative prompted a careful reassessment, demonstrating how new information or concerns can warrant independent review to confirm or clarify official findings.

Hunter S Thompson remains a seminal figure in American journalism, remembered for his incisive reporting, satirical wit, and adventurous spirit. The confirmation of the circumstances of his death allows fans and family to honor his life and work with a clear understanding of his final moments.

Authorities said the CBI’s work was thorough and objective, and the findings are now considered conclusive. The case highlights both the enduring interest in Thompson’s life and the role of law enforcement in providing transparency for families of public figures.

The Colorado review closes the chapter on one of modern journalism’s most colorful and controversial figures, confirming that Hunter S Thompson’s 2005 death was a suicide, as originally reported.
