The White House has relaunched its official COVID-19 website with a sharp new focus. The updated site now highlights the theory that COVID-19 leaked from a laboratory in China. It also criticizes U.S. medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci and the pandemic policies under President Joe Biden.

The website, previously known for promoting vaccines and testing resources, now includes a prominent image of President Donald Trump. It claims the virus’s “true origins” are linked to a lab in Wuhan, China.

The changes have sparked fresh debate as U.S. intelligence agencies and scientists remain divided on the matter.

    A Shift in COVID-19 Messaging

The revamped Covid.gov site now promotes five key points to support the lab-leak theory. It says Wuhan, the city where the virus was first detected, is home to China’s top research facility on SARS viruses. It also accuses the lab of conducting risky research under weak safety conditions.

One statement on the site reads:

“By nearly all measures of science, if there was evidence of a natural origin it would have already surfaced. But it hasn’t.”

This message reflects growing U.S. skepticism toward the natural spillover theory, which suggests the virus jumped from animals to humans, possibly in a wet market.

Dr. Fauci and the ‘Preferred Narrative’

The updated site also points fingers at Dr. Anthony Fauci. It claims he promoted a narrative that COVID-19 had natural origins while ignoring signs that it may have come from a lab.

Dr. Fauci served as chief medical advisor to President Biden during the pandemic and became a widely recognized figure for his guidance during daily press briefings. He has long maintained that more scientific evidence is needed before drawing conclusions about the virus’s origin.

    U.S. Agencies Back Lab-Leak Possibility

Though the origin of COVID-19 remains officially unconfirmed, some U.S. agencies have supported the lab-leak theory in recent years.

In 2023, the Department of Energy said the virus most likely came from a lab, though its confidence level was low. Later, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a similar finding, saying it had “moderate confidence” in the theory.

More recently, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) updated its position. In a classified report, it reportedly told Congress that a lab origin is “more likely” than natural transmission.

    China Pushes Back

Beijing has strongly rejected the lab-leak theory. Chinese officials have stated that the virus most likely came from animals and not a lab.

After the CIA’s updated assessment, China responded by calling the claim “extremely unlikely.” The Chinese government also accused the U.S. of using the issue for political reasons.

“We urge the United States to stop politicizing and instrumentalizing the issue of origin-tracing,” said a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry.

    Politics, Trade, and Global Tensions

The renewed focus on the lab-leak theory comes as the U.S. and China remain locked in a tense trade war. Just this week, Washington announced higher tariffs on Chinese goods and new port fees for Chinese-linked ships.

Some analysts believe these political and economic tensions are fueling the origin debate.

“The timing of this website update is not accidental,” said James Walters, a political analyst based in Washington. “It reflects ongoing U.S.-China rivalry and efforts to control the global narrative.”

    What Scientists Say

Many scientists around the world still urge caution. The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to investigate all possible origins of COVID-19. It has called for more transparency from China and better international cooperation.

Most virologists agree that proving either theory—natural origin or lab leak—requires access to raw data from Wuhan, including lab records and early case samples. That data remains largely unavailable.

“We can’t rule anything out yet, but we also need to avoid jumping to conclusions,” said Dr. Lisa Nguyen, a virologist at Stanford University.

    The Bigger Picture

The White House’s updated website reflects a broader shift in public and political attitudes. What was once called a conspiracy theory is now part of official government messaging.

Whether this signals a permanent change in U.S. policy remains unclear. But for now, the lab-leak theory has taken center stage in the ongoing search for the truth behind COVID-19.
