US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to meet Rustem Umerov, the head of Ukraine’s National Security Council, in Florida on Thursday, a White House official confirmed.
The meeting follows Witkoff’s recent trip to Moscow, where he spent nearly five hours in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. While the Kremlin described the talks as unproductive, US President Donald Trump called the meeting “reasonably good,” noting that negotiations require cooperation from both sides.
Trump expressed optimism, saying he believes Putin wants to end the war in Ukraine, which is why talks are ongoing. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, however, urged Russia to “end the bloodshed,” accusing Putin of wasting the world’s time.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also confirmed that a meeting between the US and Ukrainian peace delegation is likely in the coming days. On social media, Zelenskyy said, “Right now, the world clearly feels that there is a real opportunity to end the war.”
Meanwhile, the conflict continues on the ground. Russian forces claimed control of two additional settlements in Pokrovsk and the Donbas region on Tuesday, increasing pressure on Ukrainian defense lines. Observers warn that the approaching winter could worsen the humanitarian crisis, particularly amid Ukraine’s ongoing energy shortages.
Peace negotiations remain complicated. Moscow has outlined three key conditions it considers essential for any resolution. First, NATO must halt military incursions near Russia’s borders. Second, the number of Ukrainian troops should be capped at 600,000. Third, Russia demands recognition of its claims over Crimea and Donbas, territories annexed in 2014.
The upcoming Florida meeting between Witkoff and Umerov is expected to focus on exploring potential paths toward a negotiated settlement while addressing both security concerns and humanitarian issues. Analysts suggest that timing is critical, as delays could escalate suffering for the Ukrainian population and complicate the conflict further.
The US has emphasized its role as a mediator in facilitating dialogue between Ukraine and Russia, while continuing to support Kyiv with military aid and diplomatic backing. Witkoff’s engagement reflects ongoing efforts to bridge differences and explore a framework for peace.
As the situation evolves, the international community is watching closely, hoping that renewed negotiations can produce a viable solution before winter exacerbates the crisis.
