Three armed militants were killed in a fierce gunfight with Indian security forces in the Shopian area of Indian-controlled Jammu and Kashmir. The clash took place on Monday, May 13, in a forested part of Shopian.

Indian media outlet NDTV reported that there may still be one more armed man hiding in the area. Security forces are continuing their search.

The gunfight began after Indian troops received intelligence about the presence of militants in the area. Acting on this tip, the army and paramilitary forces launched an operation in Shopian’s Shoke-Keller area.

According to a post shared by the Indian Army on X (formerly Twitter), the operation was led by a unit of the Rashtriya Rifles. When the soldiers approached the suspected hideout, the militants opened fire.

Security forces quickly returned fire. The exchange of bullets lasted for about two hours. After the intense fight, three militants were found dead.

The army believes that another militant could still be hiding nearby. For this reason, the area remains under tight security, and the operation is still ongoing.

A large number of soldiers and police officers have been deployed in the region. They are using drones and sniffer dogs to search the area.

This new gunfight comes soon after another major attack in the region. Just days earlier, 26 tourists were killed in a shooting in Pahalgam, a popular hill town in Jammu and Kashmir.

India blamed that attack on Pakistan. In response, the Indian army launched “Operation Sindoor” to target militant bases and stop future attacks.

In a speech to the nation on Monday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about Operation Sindoor. He said the operation marks a new chapter in the country’s fight against terrorism.

Modi stressed that India will not back down in its fight to protect its people. He promised that those who harm the country will face strong action.

The recent violence has sparked fear among local residents. Many people in Shopian have stayed indoors since the gunfight started. Schools and shops in the area have been closed.

Officials say the identity of the three dead militants has not yet been confirmed. The bodies have been sent for medical checks and identification.

Jammu and Kashmir has long been a region marked by violence. Armed groups have been fighting Indian forces for years. Some groups demand independence for Kashmir. Others want it to become part of Pakistan.

India accuses Pakistan of supporting these groups. Pakistan denies the charge and says it only gives political and moral support to the people of Kashmir.

The Indian army continues to carry out search operations in different parts of the region. Officials say they are working to find and stop any armed militants.

People living in these areas often face curfews and security checks. Life becomes hard during these operations, but the government says they are needed to keep the region safe.

As the situation remains tense, security forces are asking residents to stay alert and report anything unusual.

This latest clash shows that the region is still far from peace. With operations ongoing and more violence likely, the people of Jammu and Kashmir continue to live under fear and uncertainty.
