Construction of the Xiamen Xiang’an International Airport in southeast China has reached a critical stage. Officials said the project is entering final inspections, flight tests, and preparations for relocation. The airport is scheduled to begin operations in late 2026.
Once open, Xiamen Xiang’an Airport will be able to handle 45 million passengers per year. It will also process 750,000 tonnes of cargo and mail annually. The airport is designed to accommodate up to 380,000 aircraft take-offs and landings each year, making it a major hub in the region.
Workers have been inspecting lighting systems, power supply, and other key infrastructure. Flight tests and calibration of equipment are underway to ensure operational safety. Relocation of certain airport functions and personnel is also being planned ahead of the official opening.
Aerial and drone photos taken on January 20, 2026, show the exterior of the terminal, the departure hall, and the airport grounds at night. Officials said the images reflect the significant progress made on the airport’s structures and surrounding facilities.
The airport is part of China’s broader effort to expand aviation capacity in the southeast. Local authorities say the project will improve connectivity, boost economic growth, and support tourism in Xiamen and the wider Fujian Province.
Xiamen Xiang’an International Airport is expected to become a key transportation hub in the region, linking domestic and international destinations. Its large passenger capacity and cargo handling capabilities are projected to ease congestion at other airports and strengthen regional logistics networks.
Officials emphasized that safety and operational readiness are the top priorities during this final construction phase. The project has already passed multiple milestones, including runway completion and terminal construction. The upcoming tests will ensure all systems function efficiently before welcoming the first passengers.
The airport is located in Xiamen, a coastal city in Fujian Province known for its trade, tourism, and cultural heritage. Local authorities and construction teams have worked closely to ensure the project meets both modern aviation standards and regional development goals.
Once operational, the Xiamen Xiang’an Airport will play a central role in enhancing connectivity across China and with international markets. The facility is expected to significantly increase passenger and cargo traffic, supporting long-term economic growth and transportation efficiency in the southeast.
