Manchester City’s hopes of winning the FIFA Club World Cup ended in heartbreak after a 3-2 extra-time defeat to Al-Hilal at Camping World Stadium. The high-energy match saw multiple lead changes and dramatic moments from both teams in the Florida heat.

City made a strong start, controlling early possession and creating chances down the left wing. Jeremy Doku nearly helped open the scoring in the 6th minute with a quick move past Joao Cancelo, but Ruben Dias’s header went straight to goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Just minutes later, City struck. In the 10th minute, Rayan Ait-Nouri drove down the left and crossed. The ball deflected to Bernardo Silva, who tapped in from close range. Despite protests and a VAR check for handball, the goal stood.

City looked lively. Ait-Nouri and Doku showed great chemistry, with Doku cutting in and shooting just wide. Savinho also had a golden chance after getting past his defender, but Bounou saved with a brilliant reaction.

Al-Hilal reminded City of their threat before the break. Malcom set up Marcos Leonardo, who headed over, then had a deflected shot of his own. City seemed to be in control, but missed chances would come back to haunt them.

Just one minute into the second half, the match turned. City goalkeeper Ederson tried to punch clear, but the ball fell to Leonardo, who headed into an open net to make it 1-1.

Only minutes later, Al-Hilal struck again. After clearing a City corner, Malcom raced forward and finished past Ederson at the far post. Suddenly, the Saudi side were 2-1 up.

City responded fast. In the 56th minute, Bernardo Silva’s corner created chaos, and Erling Haaland reacted quickest to fire in the equaliser.

Both teams then pushed for a winner. Malcom went down under a Dias challenge and won a penalty, but the flag went up for offside. Every attack from then looked dangerous. City came close near the end of normal time, with Haaland almost scoring from close range, but Ali Lajami cleared off the line.

In extra time, City introduced fresh legs with Rayan Cherki and Omar Marmoush. Cherki almost scored early, blasting wide from distance. But it was Al-Hilal who took the lead again. Kalidou Koulibaly rose highest from a set-piece and headed in to make it 3-2.

City didn’t give up. Cherki sent in a perfect cross, and Phil Foden volleyed home for his 100th goal in a City shirt. The 3-3 score kept the match alive with just minutes left in extra time.

However, Al-Hilal had the final word. A powerful header forced a save from Ederson, but the rebound hit Leonardo, who calmly tapped in for his second goal and the match-winner.

City pressed until the end but couldn’t find another goal. The final whistle ended their Club World Cup journey.

Al-Hilal’s solid defending and sharp counter-attacks proved decisive. For City, it was a night of missed chances and moments that slipped away. The team now returns home to focus on domestic challenges, knowing this loss will be a hard one to forget.
