Wide receiver Keenan Allen is back with the Chargers after spending the first 11 years of his NFL career with the team. The two sides agreed on a one-year contract on Tuesday, marking a reunion following Mike Williams’ recent retirement.

Allen, 33, met with the Chargers on Friday for a workout. Now, he will team up again with quarterback Justin Herbert. The veteran six-time Pro Bowler returns to a very different Chargers receiving group than the one he left after being traded to the Chicago Bears last season.

Allen was originally drafted by the Chargers in 2013, selected 76th overall out of California. He stayed with the team through 2023, setting the franchise record for most receptions in a single season with 108 catches. This was despite missing the final four games due to a heel injury. Throughout that season, Allen proved to be the most consistent and trusted target on a team that struggled to find reliable receivers.

However, contract talks stalled after the 2023 season, leading to Allen’s trade to Chicago for a 2024 fourth-round pick in March. Sources close to Allen revealed he was surprised by the move. His time with the Bears was less productive, ending the season with 70 catches for 744 yards and seven touchdowns.

With Mike Williams’ retirement last month, the Chargers saw an opening to bring Allen back. Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz expressed enthusiasm about the reunion. He dismissed concerns over how Allen would fit with rising star Ladd McConkey, who mostly plays slot receiver — the same position Allen occupies.

Hortiz said, “You get good players on the field and you play them.” He compared Allen and McConkey’s potential pairing to the Bears’ DJ Moore, who played slot often while sharing the field with other receivers. Hortiz confirmed Allen was always a possible option but that Williams’ retirement made the deal more likely.

Allen’s return has already caused a roster change. Undrafted rookie quarterback DJ Uiagalelei switched his jersey number from 13 to 7 to accommodate Allen’s comeback.

The Chargers now face the task of blending Allen’s veteran experience with McConkey’s emerging talent. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman will lead efforts to balance their roles in the passing game.

Allen’s return brings added depth and experience to a Chargers offense eager to build on last season. His connection with Herbert remains a key asset, as both players have developed strong chemistry over the years.

This deal highlights the Chargers’ intent to maintain a competitive edge in a tough AFC West division. Allen’s familiarity with the team’s system and culture gives the Chargers confidence he will quickly re-integrate and contribute.
