The number of data centres across the United Kingdom is set to increase by almost a fifth, according to new planning analysis. These vast facilities, housing powerful servers for services like online banking, streaming, and artificial intelligence, are expected to grow in number from the current 477 to nearly 100 more within the next five years. The expansion reflects a surge in processing power needs as AI adoption accelerates.
More than half of the new facilities will be located in London and surrounding counties. Significant projects are also planned in Wales, Scotland, Greater Manchester, and other parts of the country. While many will be privately funded by global technology firms and investment groups, the scale of the buildout has sparked debate over the strain it may place on the UK’s energy and water resources.
One of the largest proposals is a £10 billion AI-focused data centre in Blyth, near Newcastle, to be developed on the former Blyth Power Station site. Covering 540,000 square metres across 10 giant buildings, the project is scheduled to start in 2031 and take more than three years to complete. Other developments include Microsoft’s £330 million investment in four new sites, set to be completed between 2027 and 2029, and Google’s £740 million project in Hertfordshire, which will employ air cooling instead of water to reduce environmental impact.
Government officials have stressed the economic importance of data centres, designating them as critical national infrastructure. The UK is already the third-largest data centre market in the world, behind only the United States and Germany. However, the rapid expansion is raising questions over sustainability, as many modern facilities consume significantly more power than older counterparts.
Experts have warned that these demands could indirectly lead to higher consumer energy bills. In the United States, similar developments have been linked to monthly bill increases of around £15 for some residents. Calls are growing for mechanisms that ensure companies bear the cost of their extra energy usage, rather than households.
The National Energy System Operator estimates that the projected growth in UK data centres could add up to 71 terawatt-hours of electricity demand in the next 25 years. This projection is fuelling further emphasis on clean energy expansion, including offshore wind projects, to meet future needs.
Planning delays and high energy costs have also led some operators to consider building in other countries. Industry leaders say the UK’s typical planning timeline for new facilities, which can stretch from five to seven years before securing power access, risks driving AI workloads overseas. In response, the government has overturned certain local council rejections of data centre applications, citing their role in the country’s growth strategy.
Water usage is another growing concern. Many data centres require large quantities of water to prevent overheating, yet operators often do not disclose consumption figures. Some companies are experimenting with dry cooling systems or closed-loop designs to limit strain on public supplies. Despite this, proposed sites in areas served by utilities already facing supply pressures have prompted objections from both residents and water companies.
Environmental concerns are also being voiced by communities near proposed developments, particularly those on greenbelt land. In Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, residents have protested against a £3.8 billion cloud and AI facility, arguing that the land acts as vital green space. Similar tensions have emerged internationally, with Dublin imposing a moratorium on new data centre projects in response to electricity demand pressures.
Water UK, the trade body for suppliers, has said it is eager to support new projects but insists that planning processes must be accelerated. Plans are already in motion for new reservoirs in several regions, alongside £104 billion in water infrastructure investment. The government has also set up an AI Energy Council to help balance demand with sustainable supply, ensuring that data centre growth aligns with environmental and economic priorities.
With AI technology reshaping industries, the expansion of data centre infrastructure appears inevitable. However, balancing innovation with the realities of resource management will be crucial to ensuring that the benefits of this growth are shared without placing undue strain on consumers or the environment.
