Israeli forces conducted an airstrike on Saturday targeting a senior Hamas operative in Gaza City, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet. While the official statement did not confirm the individual’s identity, multiple Hebrew media outlets reported that the target was Hudayfa Samir Abdallah al-Kahlout, better known by his nom de guerre, Abu Obeida, the longtime spokesman for Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

Abu Obeida has served as the face of Hamas military communications since 2004, gaining prominence in 2006 when he announced the kidnapping of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Known for appearing masked in all media statements, he is viewed as a symbolic figure in Gaza and across the Arab world.

The results of the strike were not immediately confirmed. Israeli security sources cited by Hebrew media expressed cautious optimism, with one telling Channel 12 that “there is optimism, we have cautiously assessed that the direction is positive.” Another source told Kan public broadcaster the outcome was “looking good.”

Palestinian sources later claimed Abu Obeida was killed, along with others in the apartment, reporting a total of 11 fatalities, including children. Senior Hamas officials and his family allegedly confirmed his death after examining the body.

The IDF said that the strike involved precision munitions, aerial surveillance, and careful intelligence gathering to minimize civilian harm. However, Hamas quickly dismissed reports of his death, describing them as “psychological warfare” aimed at undermining public trust. A statement carried by Jordanian outlet Roya News warned Palestinians against spreading rumors of Abu Obeida’s demise.

Abu Obeida’s most recent public statement came Friday evening, in which he warned that Israel’s planned offensive to capture Gaza City would expose hostages in the area to the same risks as Hamas fighters. He emphasized that “prisoners will be with our fighters in the combat and confrontation zones, subjected to the same risks and the same living conditions.”

The airstrike marks the latest escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Abu Obeida has long been central to Hamas’s communications and psychological warfare strategy, and his potential death would be a significant development in the conflict.
