Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge won the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday, October 11, setting a course record of two hours, nine minutes, and ten seconds. The two-time Olympic champion claimed his 17th marathon victory at the age of 41. The result marked his first win over the distance in three years and showed that he remains competitive against a new generation of elite runners.

Kipchoge said he increased his pace after the 30-kilometre mark because he wanted to test his condition and challenge the course record. His plan worked, allowing him to finish ahead of Australia’s Thomas Do Canto, who took second place in 2:10:35. Reece Edwards, also from Australia, finished third in 2:14:33.

The victory forms part of Kipchoge’s wider goal of running a marathon on all seven continents over two years. He began that campaign at the Cape Town Marathon in May. The project gives the veteran runner a new challenge after years of competing at the highest level in major races around the world.

Kipchoge has been one of the most successful marathon runners of his generation. His career includes Olympic titles and major marathon wins, and he has helped raise the profile of long-distance running worldwide. His latest victory is notable because marathon performance often becomes harder with age, as recovery takes longer and younger runners continue to improve their speed.

The women’s race also produced a strong result. New Zealand’s Camille French won in 2:28:25, finishing ahead of Australia’s Sinead Diver, who recorded 2:28:49. Ireland’s Nichola Sheridan took third in 2:29:13. The close times among the leading women added another competitive element to the event.

Kipchoge said he was happy to compete alongside younger runners and believes his body can still perform at a high level. His result supports that confidence, although the demands of marathon running remain considerable. Training, recovery, pacing, and race conditions all affect performance over 42.195 kilometres.

The Melbourne win gives Kipchoge another important result late in his career. It also provides momentum for his seven-continent project, which combines competition with a personal challenge. As he continues to race, fans will watch to see how he balances ambition with the physical demands of long-distance running. For now, the course record and his 17th marathon win show that he remains a major figure in the sport.
