The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, has congratulated Abdisalam Abdi Ali on his appointment as Somalia’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. This move comes as part of a broader cabinet reshuffle announced by Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, who is looking to strengthen the government amid ongoing political and security challenges in the country. Dr. Gebeyehu also praised the former Foreign Minister, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, for his dedication and efforts in improving Somalia’s relations with IGAD.

Cabinet Reshuffle Aims to Strengthen Leadership
Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, recently announced a significant reshuffle in the country’s cabinet, aiming to tackle pressing political and security issues. The reshuffle seeks to bring fresh leadership to key positions, ensuring better governance at a time when Somalia is facing multiple challenges. The new appointments reflect the government’s focus on revitalizing its leadership to improve national security and international cooperation.

New Foreign Minister Brings Vast Experience
Abdisalam Abdi Ali, the newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, replaces Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, who has moved to the Ministry of Defense. Ali brings substantial experience to the role, having previously served as Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Works. His extensive background in public service and diplomacy is expected to enhance Somalia’s foreign relations and strengthen its role within regional and international platforms.

Dr. Gebeyehu’s congratulations highlighted Ali’s ability to lead Somalia’s foreign policy efforts, especially as the country faces complex political dynamics both domestically and internationally. The IGAD chief expressed confidence that Ali’s leadership will help further Somalia’s engagement with IGAD and other regional bodies.

Farewell to Former Foreign Minister Fiqi
Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, the outgoing Foreign Minister, has been a key figure in Somalia’s diplomatic efforts, particularly in strengthening relations with IGAD. His tenure saw significant progress in Somalia’s regional cooperation. Dr. Gebeyehu praised Fiqi for his contributions to Somalia’s foreign policy and acknowledged his efforts in enhancing the country’s international standing.

Fiqi’s appointment as Somalia’s new Minister of Defense is seen as a strategic move by the government, considering his background in intelligence and security matters. Fiqi previously served as the head of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), as well as Minister of Interior. His expertise is expected to play a vital role in the country’s ongoing security efforts, which remain a top priority for the government.

Other Key Changes in the Reshuffle
The cabinet reshuffle also saw the appointment of Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi as Second Deputy Prime Minister. Abdi is a seasoned politician who has held several key government positions, including Minister of Commerce and Industry and Minister of Defense. His new role reflects his growing influence within Somalia’s political scene and his capacity to contribute to the country’s governance during a crucial period.
