West Valley City is the second-largest city in Utah and a key part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Located in Salt Lake County, this dynamic urban center is known for its cultural diversity, growing economy, and active community life. With a population of about 134,000 as of 2025, it plays a significant role in the state’s development and identity.

Incorporated on July 1, 1980, West Valley City has expanded rapidly over the past four decades. Covering approximately 35 square miles, it lies directly west of Salt Lake City and is home to residents from a wide range of backgrounds. The city is considered one of the most ethnically diverse in Utah. The population includes roughly 40% non-Hispanic White residents, 35% Hispanic or Latino, and smaller percentages of Pacific Islander, African American, Asian, and Native American residents. This mix of cultures is reflected in the city’s schools, businesses, and public events.

The economy of West Valley City is diverse and stable. Major industries include retail, manufacturing, healthcare, education, and government services. Large employers such as UPS, Discover Financial, and Convergys operate within or near the city. In addition, public sector jobs, particularly in education and local government, contribute significantly to employment opportunities for residents. The city’s close proximity to Salt Lake City also provides access to a wider job market and more economic resources.

Education in West Valley City is managed primarily by the Granite School District. This includes a range of elementary, middle, and high schools that serve the growing student population. Higher education opportunities are available nearby, with Salt Lake Community College and the University of Utah located within commuting distance. The city supports youth and family development through partnerships with schools and local programs, especially in response to concerns about youth violence and community safety.

Transportation in and around West Valley City is well developed. Interstate 215 and State Route 201 pass through the city, connecting it efficiently to surrounding areas. The Utah Transit Authority provides bus services and light rail through the TRAX Green Line, which links West Valley City to downtown Salt Lake City and other destinations. The city also lies close to Salt Lake City International Airport, making it accessible to travelers and businesses.

West Valley City is home to several key cultural and entertainment venues. The Utah Cultural Celebration Center offers art exhibits, concerts, and festivals that highlight the city’s diverse heritage. The Maverik Center is a large indoor arena that hosts hockey games, concerts, and family-friendly shows. The city also features the Valley Fair Mall, a major shopping and social hub for residents and visitors alike.

WestFest, an annual community celebration, is a long-standing tradition in West Valley City. It brings residents together with live music, carnival rides, games, and food. However, in 2025, the event was the site of a tragic shooting that left three people dead, including an infant. This event deeply impacted the community and led to renewed discussions about public safety, gun control, and youth violence prevention.

City officials have since taken steps to enhance security at public events and are working with local schools and community organizations to provide support services and prevent future tragedies. The city remains committed to transparency and continues to ask residents to participate in efforts to build a safer and more united community.

West Valley City continues to face challenges common to fast-growing urban areas, such as affordable housing shortages and rising crime. Nonetheless, the city’s leadership, diverse population, and community programs offer hope for continued progress. As a vital part of Utah’s urban landscape, West Valley City is expected to remain a center of opportunity, culture, and community strength.
