Florida has started building a large detention center to hold migrants on a remote airstrip in the Everglades. The site has been nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz” due to its isolated location surrounded by swamps and wildlife.
The facility will serve as a temporary holding center for undocumented migrants. It is being set up at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, about 36 miles from Miami. Florida officials say the centre can be completed in 30 to 60 days and will hold up to 1,000 people.
Kristi Noem, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, announced that the funding will come mostly from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The money will be drawn from FEMA’s shelter and services program, which is normally used to provide temporary housing and aid to migrants.
Noem said the project is part of a broader effort to speed up deportations, as promised by former President Donald Trump during his campaign.
She stated that under Trump’s direction, the government is moving quickly to expand detention capacity. She called the plan cost-effective and said it reflects the public’s demand for stricter border control.
Florida’s Attorney General, James Uthmeier, shared a video online explaining the choice of location. He described the old airport as “virtually abandoned” and ideal for building the new centre quickly and cheaply.
He said the isolated site would act as a natural barrier against escape. “If people get out,” he said, “there’s not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons. Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide.”
The cost of running the detention center is estimated at $450 million per year.
However, the plan has faced sharp criticism. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniela Levine Cava voiced strong concerns over the possible environmental impact. She warned that building such a facility in the Everglades region could be harmful to the fragile ecosystem.
Environmental groups and local leaders share these worries. The Everglades are a unique area that includes marshes, forests, prairies, and mangroves. They support many rare plants and animals. While Uthmeier insisted the center will not be inside Everglades National Park, critics argue that nearby construction could still cause damage.
Experts say that construction near wetlands can disrupt water flow, harm wildlife, and lead to long-term environmental loss. The region is already under stress from climate change, pollution, and past development.
