Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti strongly criticized the penalty awarded to Atletico Madrid in their 1-1 draw on Sunday.
What Happened?
The match at Santiago Bernabéu was full of controversy. Atletico Madrid got a penalty after Aurelien Tchouameni was ruled to have stamped on Samu Lino’s foot. The referee, Cesar Soto Grado, did not call a foul at first. But VAR reviewed the play and changed the decision.
This came just days after Real Madrid complained about referees in La Liga. Ancelotti was frustrated, especially since Dani Ceballos escaped a red card for a harsh tackle on Pablo Barrios in the first half.
Ancelotti’s Reaction
Ancelotti was upset about the VAR decision. He questioned the consistency of refereeing in Spain.
“The referee was close and saw what happened, but VAR changed the call. I saw a similar penalty in Athletic Club against Girona. People in football don’t understand these decisions.”
Still, Ancelotti tried to focus on his team.
“I don’t want to talk about controversy. I prefer to talk about the game. We played well, especially in the second half.”
Simeone Defends the Referee
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone defended the referee. However, he said Ceballos should have been sent off for his foul on Barrios.
“I think the referee did his best. Some people say Ceballos deserved a red card. At least, the VAR should have checked it. But overall, I think he did a good job.”
La Liga Title Race Heats Up
The 1-1 draw makes the title race even tighter. If Barcelona beats Sevilla on February 9, they will be just two points behind Real Madrid. This sets up an exciting three-way battle for the La Liga title.
