A new guaranteed income program has been introduced in Columbia County, New York, to support low-income families. Through a partnership between the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation (BTCF) and the Greater Hudson Promise Neighborhood (GHPN), the program will provide $500 per month to 42 families for two years. Each selected household will receive a total of $12,000 during the program’s duration

The program is open to families living in Columbia County who meet certain requirements. To be eligible, applicants must have at least one child under the age of six, live in the county, and earn no more than 80 percent of the county’s median income. For a two-person household, this limit is around $72,150

Applications for the program are currently open and will close on July 1. Families who meet the criteria will be entered into a lottery. From there, 42 families will be selected to take part in the initiative. The payments will begin later this year

The program is designed to help families meet daily expenses and gain financial stability. Organizers believe that guaranteed income helps parents spend more time with their children, improve their health, and pursue education or work opportunities

GHPN will manage the administrative tasks and provide support to participating families throughout the two years. The aim is to reduce stress and give families more control over their lives. The money given can be spent on anything, such as food, rent, school supplies, or savings

Programs like this have already been tested in other parts of the country. In Columbus, Ohio, 32 single mothers are currently receiving $500 per month as part of a similar project led by nonprofits like Motherful, RISE Together Innovation Institute, and UpTogether. These programs have shown that families experience better physical and mental well-being when they receive regular cash payments

Guaranteed income programs differ from traditional welfare because they are unconditional. There are no requirements to prove how the money is spent. This reduces paperwork and gives families more freedom to make the choices that are best for them

Many studies have shown that when people are given unconditional cash support, they use it wisely. Families often use the money to pay bills, cover basic needs, and save for the future. The stability of regular income helps reduce anxiety and allows parents to focus on long-term goals

Columbia County’s program could serve as a model for other communities looking to support working families. As the cost of living continues to rise, programs like this offer a simple and direct way to help those in need

Families in Columbia County who meet the requirements should apply before the July 1 deadline. Applications are available through the BTCF website
