The IRIDE constellation program marks a major step forward in Italy’s space technology and environmental monitoring capabilities. Launched as a key initiative managed by the European Space Agency (ESA) with strong support from the Italian Space Agency (ASI), the program aims to establish a network of 68 satellites by 2026. These satellites will provide crucial data to help monitor air quality, water resources, soil coverage, and support emergency and security services throughout Italy and the surrounding regions.

The first satellite of the IRIDE constellation program was launched in January 2024, kicking off a significant expansion in Italy’s satellite production and deployment capacity. Funded largely through Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), the program has a total budget of 1.1 billion euros. Of this amount, 800 million euros come from PNRR funds, demonstrating Italy’s commitment to using national recovery resources to invest in cutting-edge space infrastructure. The constellation is expected to be fully operational by June 2026, when all 68 satellites will be active in orbit, collecting and transmitting vital environmental and security data.

Argotec, a Turin-based space company, is responsible for building the satellites for the IRIDE program. This project has had a significant impact on the company and Italy’s space workforce. Before the program, Argotec produced one or two satellites a year. However, with IRIDE, production has increased dramatically to one satellite every week. This scale-up has created over 400 new jobs, attracting skilled workers back to Italy and strengthening the country’s aerospace industry. This growth also highlights Italy’s unique position as one of the few countries with a full space supply chain, from manufacturing to launching satellites and offering related services.

The satellites in the IRIDE constellation will be equipped to monitor environmental indicators such as air pollution levels and water quality. They will track changes in soil coverage, which is essential for agriculture, forestry, and land management. In addition, the constellation will enhance Italy’s ability to respond quickly to emergencies like natural disasters or security threats. Data gathered by the satellites will be available to government agencies and organizations responsible for public safety, environmental protection, and resource management.

The IRIDE constellation program represents a broader strategy by Italy to strengthen its presence in the global space economy. Italy ranks sixth worldwide in space investment relative to its GDP and is one of only nine countries with a national space agency that manages a budget exceeding one billion dollars annually. This financial commitment supports a thriving space sector that had a turnover of 18 billion euros in 2024 and contributed roughly eight billion euros to exports. The growth of programs like IRIDE plays a key role in maintaining and expanding Italy’s leadership in this area.

The collaboration between the Italian Space Agency and the European Space Agency on IRIDE also highlights Italy’s commitment to working within the European space community. The ESA’s involvement ensures that the program benefits from continental expertise and funding mechanisms, while Italy’s investments help maintain and develop national capabilities. This cooperation strengthens Europe’s overall position in space exploration and satellite technology.

The IRIDE constellation program is part of Italy’s larger efforts to innovate in aerospace and space technology. By leveraging public funding and the support of the European Union, Italy is positioning itself as a hub for satellite manufacturing and environmental monitoring. The data produced by the IRIDE satellites will have wide-ranging applications, from helping scientists study climate change to aiding disaster relief efforts and improving the management of natural resources.

Argotec’s rapid increase in satellite production driven by the IRIDE project shows how national programs can boost technological growth and job creation. With weekly satellite launches planned, Italy is demonstrating its ability to compete with other leading space nations and contribute meaningful technology to the international space community. The IRIDE constellation program thus serves as a prime example of how focused investment in space infrastructure can lead to tangible economic and scientific benefits for a country.

The success of the IRIDE constellation program is expected to encourage further development of Italy’s aerospace sector, involving small and medium-sized enterprises and fostering new partnerships both within Europe and globally. As the program progresses, it will continue to reinforce Italy’s reputation as a key player in space technology and environmental observation, while supporting the sustainable management of natural resources and enhancing public safety through space-based data.
