Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou is hopeful that defender Murillo will be fit for their Europa League opener against Real Betis next week. The Brazilian centre-back has missed the last two matches after sustaining an injury during Postecoglou’s debut game in charge.

Murillo was forced off in the first half of Forest’s 3-0 defeat at Arsenal. Since then, he has not featured in the midweek Carabao Cup loss to Swansea City or Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Burnley. The draw at Turf Moor ended a three-match losing streak in all competitions and marked Forest’s first point under Postecoglou.

In Murillo’s absence, fellow Brazilian Morato has stepped into the heart of Forest’s defence. He paired with Willy Boly during the cup defeat in Wales and partnered Nikola Milenkovic against Burnley in the Premier League. Postecoglou will hope Murillo’s return strengthens the back line as the team prepares for European competition.

Forest are set to return to the European stage for the first time in three decades. Their next challenge is a midweek trip to Spain to face Real Betis in the Europa League. Postecoglou’s men will be eager to start the continental campaign strongly after a mixed start to the season.

The Reds have shown signs of resilience under their new manager. Despite the early defeat to Arsenal and a midweek cup exit, the team earned a hard-fought draw at Burnley, demonstrating the potential to compete on multiple fronts. Murillo’s fitness will be crucial as Forest balance domestic and European commitments.

Morato’s performances have been closely watched during Murillo’s absence. He has formed solid partnerships in defence, first with Boly and then with Milenkovic. These combinations have provided stability, but the return of Murillo could allow Postecoglou to implement a more settled back line against Real Betis.

The manager has emphasized careful player management ahead of the European fixture. Ensuring Murillo is ready without rushing his recovery will be key to Forest’s defensive strategy.

Forest’s focus now turns to Spain, where they will face a challenging Real Betis side. The Europa League marks a significant milestone for the club, returning to European football after a 30-year absence. Murillo’s presence could prove vital in helping the team navigate both domestic and continental competitions this season.

Postecoglou and his squad will aim to build momentum after earning their first point under the new manager. The upcoming fixtures will test Forest’s depth and resilience, making the return of key players like Murillo all the more important.
