Trump appoints his former lawyer Lindsey Halligan as top prosecutor in Virginia, urging Pam Bondi to act against political foes.
Donald Trump has announced that Lindsey Halligan, his former lawyer, will be nominated as the new U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. The move came after Trump publicly urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to take stronger action against senior officials he has long described as political enemies.
In a message posted on Truth Social, Trump praised Bondi while stressing the need for what he called a tough prosecutor. He argued that Halligan, who has worked closely with him in the past, would be the right choice to lead prosecutions in Virginia. “Pam Bondi is doing a great job as attorney general. She is smart, careful, and loves our country. But she needs a strong prosecutor like Lindsey Halligan to get things moving,” Trump wrote.
Trump’s statement followed a series of earlier posts that directly pressured Bondi to act more aggressively. In one message, Trump demanded that she appoint Halligan to replace Erik Siebert, the U.S. attorney who resigned after declining to pursue cases against some of Trump’s critics. Siebert, a former police officer and seasoned prosecutor, had previously found no grounds to charge New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Trump expressed anger at what he called delays in seeking justice. “We can’t delay any longer. It’s hurting our reputation. They impeached me twice and indicted me five times over nothing. Justice must be served now,” he wrote.
Lindsey Halligan is not new to Trump’s legal battles. She represented him in civil cases following the FBI’s search of his Mar-a-Lago estate during an investigation into classified documents. Halligan has also been described as one of Trump’s close assistants and advisors.
At the time of the announcement, it remained unclear whether Halligan would serve on an interim basis before a formal Senate confirmation vote. Some officials within the Justice Department were caught off guard. According to reports, Mary “Maggie” Cleary, another department lawyer, believed she had been chosen for the role before Trump’s announcement.
The decision to push Halligan forward also highlighted ongoing tensions between Trump and federal prosecutors. According to sources familiar with the matter, Siebert had faced pressure from Trump officials to pursue charges against Letitia James over mortgage fraud allegations. Siebert reportedly refused, saying the evidence was too weak to proceed.
His office was also involved in a separate probe connected to James Comey, the former FBI director who led investigations into Trump’s 2016 campaign. Like James, Comey has often been singled out by Trump as an opponent. Siebert concluded that both cases lacked sufficient grounds for prosecution.
Trump’s decision to publicly pressure Bondi and push for Halligan’s appointment has sparked debate. Supporters argue that Halligan’s loyalty and legal experience make her a suitable choice for the post. Critics, however, view the move as a direct attempt to use federal prosecutions for political purposes.
Bondi herself has recently faced backlash from conservative groups after signaling plans to address hate speech following the killing of activist Charlie Kirk. Trump’s endorsement of her leadership, combined with his push for Halligan, shows his continued influence over legal and political debates within his circle.
The appointment of Lindsey Halligan underscores Trump’s strategy of surrounding himself with trusted allies in key legal roles. Whether her nomination will gain Senate approval remains to be seen, but the move marks another example of Trump’s push to reshape the justice system around figures aligned with him. For Trump, the appointment represents both a personal and political statement. He continues to frame himself as a target of unfair investigations, while demanding stronger action against those he identifies as opponents. As Halligan prepares to step into her new role, the focus will be on how her appointment affects ongoing legal disputes and the broader political landscape.
