The University of Idaho, located in the small town of Moscow, is the state’s oldest public university and a cornerstone of higher education in the region. Founded in 1889, the institution has grown into Idaho’s leading land-grant university, offering a wide range of academic programs and making major contributions to research and community development.

The main campus spans more than 1,500 acres and features a mix of historic buildings and state-of-the-art facilities. Set in a rural and scenic part of northern Idaho near the Washington border, the university provides students with a quiet and focused learning environment. With a student body of around 11,000 from across the United States and over 70 countries, the University of Idaho is a diverse and inclusive place to study.

Academically, the university offers more than 300 degree programs. Students can choose from undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and professional tracks. The University of Idaho is especially known for its strengths in engineering, agriculture, natural resources, law, and business. One of its key features is the University of Idaho College of Law, which operates in both Moscow and Boise, giving students more flexibility and options for legal education within the state.

The university is recognized as a Carnegie R2 research institution, meaning it has high research activity. It leads many important studies in areas such as agriculture, forestry, cybersecurity, water systems, and sustainable energy. With several research and extension centers across the state, the University of Idaho plays an important role in solving real-world problems, especially those that affect rural communities, farms, and public land.

Athletics is also an important part of campus life. The Idaho Vandals compete in NCAA Division I sports as part of the Big Sky Conference. Football, which once competed at the Football Bowl Subdivision level, now plays in the Football Championship Subdivision. Sporting events bring students, alumni, and community members together and create a strong sense of school spirit.

The university has a long-standing mission as a land-grant institution. This means it is dedicated not only to providing quality education but also to making it accessible to more people. It also focuses on research that benefits the public and includes outreach and service programs that extend across the state. These values are deeply embedded in the school’s goals of innovation, sustainability, and civic engagement.

Over the years, the University of Idaho has produced many notable alumni. These include U.S. Senator Larry Craig, actor Dylan Baker, and award-winning author Carol Ryrie Brink. Graduates have gone on to successful careers in politics, entertainment, literature, science, and education, showing the lasting impact of a degree from the university.

The University of Idaho made national and international headlines in November 2022, after four of its students were tragically murdered in an off-campus house. The event shocked the nation and deeply affected the university community. Despite the tragedy, the institution continues to support its students and prioritize campus safety, while also working to heal and move forward.

With its strong academic offerings, respected research programs, and commitment to public service, the University of Idaho remains one of the most important educational institutions in the Pacific Northwest. Its work impacts not only students and faculty, but also communities throughout Idaho and beyond. As it continues to evolve, the university upholds its mission to educate, discover, and serve the people of Idaho and the broader world.
