New Orleans native and Grammy-winning musician Trombone Shorty, born Troy Andrews, is giving fans an insider’s look at what makes Louisiana cuisine so special. Known for blending jazz, funk, and soul in his music, Andrews says the same passion and love are found in the kitchens of his hometown.
At 39, Andrews believes the “best” Louisiana food is often cooked at home. Yet, he has several favorite spots that capture the heart and soul of New Orleans. “I like to go to Dooky Chase in my neighborhood in the Sixth Ward. Some of the cooks there, I actually know personally. I’ve eaten in their homes, so I know they bring that same touch to the kitchen wherever they cook,” he said.
Andrews also highlighted L’il Dizzy’s in the Tremé neighborhood, Willie Mae’s Scotch House, Emeril’s, and Parkway. For him, dining at these establishments is more than a meal; it feels like “eating from someone’s house.”
“You can feel the soul and spirit of it. It’s not a franchise. You can tell it’s cooked with love. That atmosphere reminds me of growing up, watching our grandmothers and mothers work hard in the kitchen while listening to music,” Andrews said.
Beyond being a celebrated musician, Andrews is now partnering with Louisiana Fish Fry, a seasoning brand that celebrates Louisiana’s rich culinary culture. He described the collaboration as “a perfect match” that links the state’s music and food traditions.
“When you think about Louisiana, food and music are always spoken in the same sentence. They are like sister and brother when it comes to the culture of New Orleans,” Andrews explained. “I thought it would be great to collaborate with a brand representing such a unique place.”
As part of this partnership, Andrews created Sound of the Bayou, Louisiana Fish Fry’s first digital content series. The project includes a Spotify playlist curated to match signature Louisiana Fish Fry recipes. Selecting artists for the playlist was effortless for Andrews, who drew inspiration from the sounds of his hometown.
“In Lafayette, you hear zydeco and Cajun music all the time. Growing up in New Orleans, brass bands, the Hot Boys, or No Limit are always playing. I wanted to bring some of these great Louisiana artists into a playlist so anyone, anywhere, can turn their kitchen into a Louisiana festivity,” he said.
For Andrews, this project combines his two great passions: music and food. By sharing his favorite dishes and restaurants, he hopes to showcase Louisiana’s cultural richness and encourage people to experience the state’s culinary heritage.
