New Jersey voters are heading into an unpredictable governor’s race that has become a test of national politics. Democrat Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli are facing off in one of only two gubernatorial contests this year. With early voting already underway, the tight race is drawing national attention as a sign of what may come in the 2026 midterm elections.
Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy pilot and federal prosecutor, currently serves in Congress. Her opponent, Jack Ciattarelli, is a businessman and former state lawmaker making his third bid for governor. This time, he has the backing of former president Donald Trump.
The state’s outgoing governor, Phil Murphy, cannot seek re-election after two terms. While New Jersey often votes for Democrats in national elections, it has a long history of switching parties in gubernatorial races. No party has held the office for three straight terms since 1961.
Republicans have gained ground in recent years. Ciattarelli came close to winning in 2021, losing by only three points. In the 2024 presidential race, Kamala Harris carried the state by less than six points—down sharply from Joe Biden’s 16-point margin four years earlier. This shift has boosted Republican confidence that they can take the governor’s office.
Polls show a close contest, with Sherrill holding a small lead. Analysts say a Ciattarelli win would signal that Trump’s brand of politics can succeed in a state that is wealthy, urban, and highly educated. A Sherrill victory, meanwhile, could show voter rejection of Trump’s influence and a revival of moderate Democratic energy ahead of the midterms.
Both candidates are focusing on local issues such as affordability, healthcare, and housing. Still, national politics remain at the center of the debate. Surveys show that more than half of voters see Trump as a major factor in their choice. Sherrill has tried to tie Ciattarelli to Trump’s policies, while Ciattarelli argues that Sherrill represents a continuation of the unpopular Murphy administration.
The race has attracted major figures from both parties. Ciattarelli has campaigned with Trump allies including Byron Donalds and Vivek Ramaswamy. Trump himself appeared by video at a campaign rally. Sherrill has drawn support from well-known Democrats such as Barack Obama, Gretchen Whitmer, Wes Moore, Josh Shapiro, and Pete Buttigieg.
Money has poured into the state as both sides view the election as a bellwether for national sentiment. Voter turnout is expected to play a decisive role. In 2021, only about 40% of eligible voters cast ballots in the governor’s race, and experts say whichever side mobilizes its base will likely win.
Political observers are also watching how Sherrill balances her party’s moderate and progressive factions. Her campaign has emphasized unity and practical solutions, while Republicans frame her as part of the national Democratic establishment.
If Ciattarelli wins, it would be a major morale boost for Republicans and could energize their push into 2026. If Sherrill prevails, it would reinforce the power of moderate Democrats who argue that centrist policies are key to keeping voters on board.
Whatever the outcome, the New Jersey governor’s race is serving as an early test of Trump’s continuing influence and a glimpse into how both parties are preparing for the next political chapter.
