Dolly Parton could not attend the 16th Academy Governors Awards on Sunday, Nov. 16, to accept her honorary Oscar. The 79-year-old country music legend shared her gratitude in a recorded video from Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom.

In the video, Parton reflected on her East Tennessee upbringing. “We didn’t have much, but my mama and dad showed me that the more you give, the more blessings come your way,” she said. “And I have been blessed more than I ever thought possible, like with this award tonight.”

“From my heart to yours, I truly thank you,” Parton added, sending a warm message to her fans.

Parton was one of four recipients of honorary Oscars this year. The other honorees included Tom Cruise, choreographer Debbie Allen, and production designer Wynn Thomas.

Despite recent health concerns and the loss of her husband of 58 years, Carl Dean, in March, Parton’s absence was due to a scheduling conflict. She clarified in an October Instagram video, “I ain’t dead yet!” to dismiss rumors about her health. A representative confirmed in September that Parton had informed the Academy she could not attend when first invited.

The award specifically recognized Parton’s extensive charitable work. Beyond her music career, the icon has appeared in films like 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias. She has also earned two Oscar nominations for best original song, for “9 to 5” and “Travelin’ Thru” from Transamerica.

Parton’s 9 to 5 co-star, Lily Tomlin, honored her in a speech recalling their time on the singer’s first film. “During one rehearsal, I forgot a line, and Dolly recited it for me,” Tomlin said. “She said that it was her first movie, so she thought she’d memorize the whole darn script. And she did. Even Dabney Coleman’s parts.”

Tomlin highlighted Parton’s lifelong commitment to helping others. “Dolly Parton is one of the few people who remain in this world someone that everyone loves and respects,” she said to applause. “Not just 9 to 5 but 24 hours a day, every day of the year.”

The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award celebrates Parton’s charitable initiatives, including her literacy programs and donations to healthcare and education. Her work has had a global impact, earning her admiration beyond music and film.

Even in her absence, Parton’s message and achievements resonated with attendees. Her video allowed fans and the Academy to celebrate her legacy while honoring her dedication to giving back.

From her humble beginnings in Tennessee to her status as a cultural icon, Dolly Parton’s story exemplifies generosity, talent, and perseverance. Her honorary Oscar acknowledges a lifetime of contributions to entertainment and humanitarian causes alike.

Through her music, films, and philanthropy, Parton continues to inspire generations worldwide. Her heartfelt thank-you video serves as a reminder of her humility and enduring influence in the arts and charitable work.

Dolly Parton’s recognition at the Governors Awards underscores her role as a beloved global figure. Even without being physically present, her spirit and message of giving continue to leave a lasting mark.
