Two Iowa National Guard soldiers, Edgar Torres and Nate Howard, were killed in an attack in Syria, officials confirmed. Three other Guard members were injured in the incident.

Meskwaki Police Chief Jeffrey Bunn, Howard’s father, shared his grief on Facebook, saying his son “loved what he was doing and would be the first in and last out.” Howard’s dedication and bravery have been widely remembered by fellow soldiers.

Iowa Guardsman David Hernandez spoke about Torres, recalling the strong bond formed during deployments. Torres was described as family-oriented, positive, and always willing to take on missions. He embodied the values of his working-class Latino upbringing, often putting others before himself.

The Iowa National Guard has not yet publicly identified the three injured soldiers. IANG Director of Public Affairs Jackie Schmillen said the delay allows coordination with appropriate entities before releasing names.

Both soldiers are being honored by friends, family, and fellow Guard members for their commitment, courage, and service. Memorials and tributes are expected to continue as the community mourns their loss.

Officials emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by these service members while continuing support for those injured in the attack.
