A New York City Council employee was detained by federal immigration authorities during a routine appointment on Long Island on Monday, prompting strong criticism from city officials. The incident has been called an “egregious government overreach” by local leaders.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed outrage over the detention, describing it as an attack on the city’s democracy and values. He called for the immediate release of the employee and said he would closely monitor the situation.

The employee, whose identity has not been disclosed for privacy reasons, was held by ICE during an appointment in Bethpage, Nassau County. City Council Speaker Julie Menin said the council learned of the detention Monday afternoon after the employee contacted the council’s human resources department during his one allowed phone call.

“DHS confirmed that this employee had gone in for a routine court appointment and was nevertheless detained. They provided no other basis for his detainment,” Menin said. “He is a city council employee who is doing everything right. He went to the court when he was asked.”

The staffer has worked as a data analyst for the City Council for approximately one year and has legal authorization to remain in the United States until October. Officials emphasized that his arrest was solely related to his immigration status.

Democratic Congressman Dan Goldman confirmed that the employee is of Venezuelan descent and described him as a law-abiding immigrant with work authorization. “There is no indication that anything about this individual other than his immigration status caused him to be arrested,” Goldman said.

The employee has since been transferred to a Manhattan detention center. City officials reported they have been unable to reach his family. Goldman said his office has contacted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to advocate for his release.

New York Attorney General Letitia James also called for immediate action. “We will not stand for attacks on our city, its public servants, and its residents,” she stated, demanding the employee’s release.

Governor Kathy Hochul criticized the detention, saying such actions represent the dangers of weaponized immigration enforcement. “Detaining people during routine court appearances doesn’t make us safer. It erodes trust, spreads fear, and violates basic principles of fairness,” she said.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among city officials and community advocates. Many emphasize that routine immigration proceedings should not result in detentions, especially for law-abiding residents with work authorization.

Council leaders said they are actively working to secure the employee’s release while reviewing legal and administrative options. The detention comes amid ongoing national debates over immigration enforcement policies and their local impact.

Officials reiterated their commitment to protecting city employees and residents from what they described as unfair targeting. The situation remains fluid as authorities continue to negotiate with ICE and monitor the case closely.

The NYC Council ICE Detention has drawn attention from both local and national leaders, highlighting the tension between federal immigration enforcement and city governance. Mayor Mamdani and other officials have vowed to take all necessary steps to ensure the employee’s swift release.
