A dispute over the Chagos Islands has triggered fresh tension between Britain’s main political parties. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticised Reform UK leader Nigel Farage after he suggested offering the United States long-term control of Diego Garcia, a key military base in the Indian Ocean. Badenoch described the proposal as damaging to British sovereignty and questioned whether it would serve the country’s interests.

The Chagos Islands have been at the centre of a long-running dispute over sovereignty and the future of the people who were removed from the islands decades ago. Diego Garcia is strategically important because it hosts a major US and UK military facility. The base supports operations across a wide region, making its future a matter of defence policy as well as a question of Britain’s relationship with the United States.

Farage defended his position by arguing that the military base should remain available for US use. However, his comments prompted criticism from political opponents who said the proposal could weaken Britain’s control over its territory. The disagreement has also become part of the wider contest between the Conservatives and Reform UK, both of which are trying to attract voters who support a tougher approach to national sovereignty and immigration.

The issue presents a difficult balance for British policymakers. The country wants to maintain a close defence relationship with Washington, but it must also consider international law, the rights of Chagossians and the long-term future of the islands. Political arguments may continue as parties attempt to show that they can protect Britain’s interests. Any final settlement will need to address both strategic needs and the people whose lives have been shaped by the dispute.
