Harare, Zimbabwe – Prominent cleric Emmanuel Makandiwa has urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa to facilitate the safe return of exiled members of the G40 faction, stating that they no longer pose a political threat.

The G40 faction, a group within Zimbabwe’s ruling party, Zanu PF, was sidelined in 2017 after then-President Robert Mugabe was ousted in a military intervention. Several high-profile figures, including former cabinet ministers Saviour Kasukuwere, Walter Mzembi, Jonathan Moyo, and Patrick Zhuwawo, fled the country, citing fears of persecution under Mnangagwa’s administration.

Makandiwa Advocates for G40’s Safe Return

During a sermon at his Chitungwiza basilica, Makandiwa stated that members of the once-powerful faction should be allowed to return home, arguing that they are now politically irrelevant and harmless.

“I have so much respect for Walter Mzembi. It is unfortunate that they are in a foreign land as we speak. You look at Walter Mzembi—he is harmless. He is pure. If they can allow them back into their country, it will be a blessing for your nation. There is nothing wrong with that. No one is powerful besides the power that you give them,” said Makandiwa.

His remarks have sparked discussions on whether Mnangagwa’s government will consider facilitating their return, given the deep-rooted political tensions that have persisted since their exile.

    Political Exile and Corruption Allegations

After Mugabe’s removal, some members of the G40 faction faced legal charges in Zimbabwe. Mzembi and Kasukuwere were brought before the courts, accused of corruption during their tenure in government. Both dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, arguing that they were victims of a post-coup crackdown meant to eliminate opposition within Zanu PF.

Despite these legal issues, Makandiwa insists that G40 members should be granted a safe return, as he believes they no longer wield any political influence that could challenge the current administration.

    Makandiwa’s Political Prophecy

The cleric also reiterated claims that he had foreseen Mugabe’s downfall and Mnangagwa’s rise to power. According to Makandiwa, he had previously warned Mugabe about an impending shift in leadership, a prediction that came to pass when the military intervened in 2017.

Makandiwa, known for his controversial statements on political matters, has been an influential figure in Zimbabwe’s socio-political landscape. In 2023, he publicly endorsed Mnangagwa by inviting him to his church, further demonstrating his involvement in national affairs.

A Call for Zimbabweans to Return Home

In addition to advocating for the return of G40 members, Makandiwa encouraged Zimbabweans who have left the country in search of better economic opportunities to consider coming back home.

“Zimbabwe is full of blessings. Bring your children who are in the diaspora. They are blessings that have left,” Makandiwa urged.

Zimbabwe has witnessed significant emigration over the years, with many citizens seeking greener pastures due to economic instability, inflation, and unemployment. While the government has made efforts to stabilize the economy, many Zimbabweans remain skeptical about returning.

    Will Mnangagwa Heed Makandiwa’s Call?

It remains to be seen whether Mnangagwa’s government will entertain the idea of allowing G40 members to return without fear of persecution. Given the factionalism that has historically plagued Zanu PF, political analysts believe any reconciliation efforts would require a shift in approach from the ruling party.

For now, Makandiwa’s statements have reignited debate over Zimbabwe’s political landscape and the fate of exiled politicians. Whether the government takes action on his call remains uncertain.
