Argentine President Javier Milei announced that Argentina threatens Falklands oil sanctions against energy companies planning exploration activities near the disputed islands, escalating long standing tensions over sovereignty claims that have persisted for decades between Argentina and Britain. Milei stated that the prospect of two oil companies conducting exploration work in waters surrounding the islands represents an urgent threat to Argentine national interests, signaling potential economic consequences for firms proceeding with drilling activities in the contested area. The Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, have remained a source of diplomatic tension since Britain and Argentina fought a brief war over the territory in the early 1980s. Britain has maintained control of the islands throughout the decades since that conflict concluded. Downing Street responded firmly to Milei's comments, emphasizing that the islanders' right to self determination extends to their ability to develop and exploit their own natural resources, reflecting Britain's consistent position on sovereignty and resource rights regarding the territory. This latest dispute highlights how resource development can reignite longstanding territorial tensions, even in situations where the underlying sovereignty dispute has remained largely dormant for extended periods without significant diplomatic escalation between the involved nations. Energy companies considering exploration activities near the islands now face additional political risk beyond the standard commercial and technical challenges typically associated with offshore drilling projects, given the potential for sanctions or other punitive measures from the Argentine government. International legal experts note that sovereignty disputes over resource rich territories often intensify when actual economic development becomes a realistic prospect, transforming what may have been largely symbolic territorial claims into disputes with genuine financial stakes for involved parties. The islanders themselves, who have consistently expressed strong preference for remaining under British administration through previous referendums, find themselves once again at the center of a diplomatic dispute despite having limited direct influence over how the broader sovereignty question ultimately gets resolved. Argentina's renewed assertiveness regarding the islands comes amid broader efforts by the Milei government to establish clear positions on various national interest issues, potentially reflecting domestic political considerations alongside genuine concerns about resource development near the disputed territory. British officials have consistently maintained that sovereignty over the islands is not subject to negotiation, a position reinforced by the strong preference islanders have expressed for continued British administration whenever the question has been formally put before them in previous votes. As this latest dispute unfolds, energy companies with interests in the region will need to carefully weigh the potential diplomatic and economic risks against the commercial opportunities associated with exploration activities near the islands. The broader sovereignty dispute appears likely to remain unresolved for the foreseeable future, continuing to periodically resurface whenever practical questions like resource development bring it back into focus.

Travelers going from Switzerland to Milan through the Simplon route will face longer journeys in the summer of 2025. The railway line between Arona and Premosello in Italy will be closed from June 8 to July 27 and again from August 30 to September 13. During these periods, passengers must switch to buses between Domodossola and Milan, according to the Swiss railway operator SBB.

Construction causes route closure between Arona and Premosello

The full closure of the railway section between Arona and Premosello will stop all train traffic in that area. This part of the line lies in northern Italy’s Piedmont region. Travelers will have to leave the train at Domodossola and continue their trip by bus to reach Milan.

The change means fewer seats will be available for travelers and more time will be needed to complete the trip.

SBB and Trenitalia add buses to support passengers

To reduce the disruption, SBB and the Italian railway company Trenitalia will provide additional buses. These will run from Geneva to Milan through Martigny.

At the same time, the online timetable will be updated. It will include alternate train routes through Zurich and the Gotthard Pass.

Even with these changes, passengers should be ready for delays. Travel times will increase by at least one hour during the construction periods.

Fewer EuroCity trains for the rest of the year

The construction project will also affect EuroCity train schedules in 2025. Throughout the year, there will be only three EuroCity trains per direction on weekdays between Basel, Bern, and Milan. Normally, there are four.

The same reduction will apply to trains from Geneva to Milan via Brig. On weekends, however, four EuroCity trains will continue to operate in each direction.

Goal of the project is better freight transport

The reason for the work is to expand the four-meter corridor between Domodossola and Milan. This corridor is important for transporting goods across the Alps.

The project will allow bigger freight trains to pass through the region. This will help shift cargo from trucks to trains, making transport more efficient and environmentally friendly.

    What travelers need to know

If you plan to travel on this route during the affected dates, be prepared for changes. You may face longer travel times and fewer direct train options. Switching from train to bus at Domodossola will be required.

The updated timetable will help you plan your journey. You can also look at other routes to Milan that are not affected by the closure.

This railway closure is a short-term inconvenience for a long-term benefit. It will improve freight movement and help the environment by supporting rail over road transport.
