Microsoft and OpenAI are in disagreement over a key contract clause about artificial general intelligence (AGI), according to a report by The Information on Wednesday.

The current contract states that if OpenAI creates AGI, Microsoft would lose access to that technology. Microsoft wants OpenAI to remove this clause, but OpenAI has declined, the report said.

A joint statement from OpenAI and Microsoft said, “We have a long-term, productive partnership that has delivered amazing AI tools for everyone. Talks are ongoing and we are optimistic we will continue to build together for years to come.”

OpenAI needs Microsoft’s approval to finalize its change into a public-benefit corporation. However, both companies have not yet agreed on the terms after months of talks, according to sources.

Microsoft began its partnership with OpenAI in 2019, investing $1 billion to support the startup’s AI development on its Azure cloud platform.
