Brad Hoylman-Sigal is a prominent member of the New York State Senate and a well-known advocate for progressive causes. Representing Manhattan’s 47th Senate District, which includes neighborhoods such as Greenwich Village, Chelsea, and Midtown, Hoylman-Sigal has served in the Senate since 2013. He is a Democrat who has consistently focused on issues such as LGBTQ+ rights, tenant protections, civil justice, and environmental reform.

Born on October 27, 1965, Hoylman-Sigal holds degrees from several respected institutions. He earned his undergraduate degree from West Virginia University, went on to study at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and later obtained his law degree from Harvard Law School. These academic experiences helped shape his commitment to justice and public service.

In 2023, he legally changed his name to Brad Hoylman-Sigal to honor and include the surname of his husband, David Sigal. Together, the couple has two daughters, born through surrogacy. Hoylman-Sigal often speaks about his family life and the importance of equal rights for all, using his own experiences as a foundation for his advocacy.

Hoylman-Sigal currently serves as the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, a powerful position that allows him to influence legislation related to civil rights, legal reform, and the structure of the judicial system in New York State. His leadership in this role has helped advance several key laws and policies.

One of his most widely recognized legislative achievements is his work on the Child Victims Act. This law extended the statute of limitations for survivors of childhood sexual abuse, allowing victims more time to file lawsuits against abusers and institutions that may have protected them. Hoylman-Sigal was instrumental in passing this legislation, which was seen as a significant victory for survivors and advocates.

He also played a major role in passing the Gender Recognition Act in 2021. This law made it easier for transgender and non-binary individuals in New York to amend their legal documents to reflect their gender identity. The act removed outdated medical and legal barriers and established a third gender marker, “X,” on official state forms.

In addition to his work on civil rights, Hoylman-Sigal has also focused on environmental and housing issues. He supported the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, one of the most ambitious environmental laws in the United States. The law commits New York to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions drastically by 2050 and invest in renewable energy.

Hoylman-Sigal has pushed for stronger protections for renters, supporting legislation that limits evictions and rent hikes. He believes in fair housing and has called for reforms to make New York’s housing system more equitable for working families.

He is also a sponsor of the Stop Hiding Hate Act, a law that requires social media platforms to disclose how they handle hate speech and harmful content. This law has attracted national attention, especially after the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, filed a lawsuit challenging it. Hoylman-Sigal and his co-sponsors argue that the law does not restrict speech but instead demands transparency from tech companies that have long operated without oversight.

As an openly gay lawmaker, Hoylman-Sigal has always made LGBTQ+ rights a core part of his political mission. He has received strong support from progressive groups, labor unions, and the Working Families Party. His consistent focus on social justice has made him a respected figure in New York politics.

Brad Hoylman-Sigal continues to push for change that reflects the needs and rights of New Yorkers from all walks of life. His legal background, personal experiences, and progressive values help shape his efforts to create a fairer and more inclusive state.
