Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, has become one of the most recognizable and controversial figures in the world of digital media. Born on March 22, 1977, in Swampscott, Massachusetts, Portnoy graduated from the University of Michigan in 1999 with a degree in education. His journey from handing out sports betting newspapers on Boston streets to owning a multi-million-dollar media empire is one of the most unique success stories in American business.

Portnoy launched Barstool Sports in 2003 as a free newspaper focused on gambling odds and fantasy sports. The paper quickly gained traction for its humorous tone and edgy content. As digital platforms grew, Portnoy transitioned Barstool into an online publication, expanding its topics to include sports commentary, lifestyle coverage, and viral internet culture. He developed a distinct voice—unfiltered, often offensive, and unapologetically personal—that resonated with a growing audience of young, mostly male fans.

A major part of Portnoy’s personal brand is his “One Bite Pizza Reviews” series. In this popular video segment, he reviews pizza shops across the United States, taking a single bite from each slice before offering a score out of ten. His tagline, “One bite, everybody knows the rules,” became a viral catchphrase. The series not only boosted his own fame but also helped small pizzerias attract new customers. Some restaurants have credited his reviews for significantly increasing their sales.

In 2016, The Chernin Group bought a majority stake in Barstool Sports, helping it expand into podcasting, merchandise, and live events. Then in 2020, Penn National Gaming acquired a 36% stake for $163 million. The deal tied Barstool’s brand to sports betting, allowing Penn to use Barstool as a marketing platform. However, in August 2023, Portnoy announced that Penn had sold Barstool back to him for just $1. He stated that Penn wanted to pursue a partnership with ESPN and no longer needed Barstool. As part of the agreement, Penn retained rights to 50% of any future sale of the company. Portnoy’s return to full ownership was widely discussed in media and business circles.

Despite his business success, Dave Portnoy is no stranger to controversy. Critics have accused him of promoting misogynistic and toxic workplace behavior. Past content from Barstool and Portnoy’s own public remarks have led to backlash from activists and journalists. He has also been involved in legal battles, including a reported insider trading investigation in 2021, which he claimed ended without charges. Portnoy has consistently defended himself, arguing that he represents free speech and that his critics are overly sensitive.

At the same time, Portnoy has used his platform for philanthropy. In 2020, he launched the Barstool Fund to support small businesses struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. The fund raised over $40 million and helped hundreds of businesses stay afloat. The effort earned him praise from across the political spectrum, even from critics who had previously opposed his methods.

Portnoy’s personal life has also been a topic of public interest. He was once married to Renee Portnoy, though they later divorced. He often shares personal updates, including opinions on stocks, sports bets, and nightlife experiences, on social media under his handle @stoolpresidente. He is especially active on X, formerly Twitter, where he interacts with both fans and critics. His presence on the platform often leads to trending topics and heated debates.

Dave Portnoy has built a media empire by refusing to follow traditional rules. Whether he’s reviewing pizza, feuding with journalists, or building businesses, he does it all in his own voice. Love him or hate him, Portnoy has left a lasting impact on sports media, internet culture, and digital entrepreneurship.
