France has outlined the UN Council September agenda Iran priorities for its month long presidency of the Security Council, identifying Iran alongside Haiti and Sudan as key issues the body aims to address during a particularly consequential period for international diplomacy.

France’s representative, serving as Council president for the month, described the timing as unusually significant given that the annual United Nations General Assembly session opens during the same period, bringing heads of state and government to New York for high level discussions on global challenges.

The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran remains a central concern for the Security Council, with the situation having grown more complex following renewed strikes and counterstrikes that shattered a brief period of relative calm in the six month long confrontation.

Council discussions on Iran are expected to address both the immediate security situation, including continued instability affecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and the broader humanitarian toll the conflict has taken on Iranian civilians throughout the extended hostilities.

France’s Council presidency emphasized that any Iran related discussions this month would need to grapple with ongoing concerns about freedom of navigation through the strait alongside recognition of the civilian population’s suffering resulting from choices made throughout the conflict by various parties involved.

Haiti’s deepening security and humanitarian crisis also features prominently on this month’s Security Council agenda, reflecting sustained international concern about ongoing instability in the Caribbean nation that has strained the country’s institutions and endangered its civilian population for an extended period.

The situation in Sudan similarly remains a priority for Council discussions, as the country continues grappling with a protracted conflict that has created one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, displacing millions and straining international relief efforts throughout the region.

Diplomatic sources note that balancing attention across multiple simultaneous global crises presents ongoing challenges for the Security Council, particularly during a month when the broader General Assembly session naturally commands significant diplomatic attention and resources from member states.

France’s representative acknowledged this tension directly, noting that tradition affords the General Assembly particular prominence during this period while stressing that the Security Council retains its core responsibility for proposing collective responses to conflicts and facilitating peaceful resolution efforts worldwide.

The Council’s work this month will unfold against a backdrop of significant global uncertainty, with the Iran conflict having recently escalated further and other crises including Haiti and Sudan showing few signs of near term resolution despite sustained international attention and diplomatic engagement.

As the month progresses, diplomatic observers will be watching closely for any concrete Council action beyond continued discussion of these ongoing crises. Given the scale of challenges facing the international community this September, expectations for substantive breakthroughs remain measured even as the Council maintains its commitment to sustained engagement across each of these pressing global concerns.
