Israel has allowed hundreds of Palestinians to leave Gaza after months of strict restrictions on exits. The change follows a proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump in February, suggesting the resettlement of Gaza’s population. The easing of travel restrictions has sparked international debate and concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

    Israel’s Decision to Open Exits

For the first time in months, Israel has permitted several hundred Palestinians to leave Gaza. This decision comes after U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal in February to resettle Gaza’s 2.1 million residents. The move, which was framed as a potential solution to the region’s long-standing issues, has received backlash from international bodies like the United Nations and various human rights organizations.

Trump’s proposal, which suggested that Gaza’s inhabitants be resettled outside the enclave, has drawn widespread condemnation. Many have labeled it as ethnic cleansing. Despite this, Israel’s far-right government has supported the idea. Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, announced plans in March to create a body aimed at facilitating “voluntary” departures from Gaza, aligning with Trump’s resettlement plan.

    Countries Accepting Gaza Evacuations

Since the beginning of this year, several countries have agreed to accept Palestinian evacuees from Gaza. According to diplomats, France has taken in over 170 individuals, while Germany has accepted more than 70. Other nations have also offered refuge to smaller groups of evacuees.

However, diplomats involved in the process argue that the exits are not as “voluntary” as Israel claims. They explain that many of the people leaving Gaza are dual nationals, those needing medical treatment, or individuals who had already secured visas to third countries. These individuals had previously been denied exit or had experienced repeated delays in their attempts to leave.

    A Shift in Israeli Policy

Israel’s military body responsible for civil affairs in Gaza, COGAT, confirmed that dozens of exits had been coordinated. However, they did not specify the exact number of people who had left. COGAT stated that these departures were made in line with instructions from Israel’s political leadership.

The Israeli government had previously imposed near-total restrictions on exits from Gaza. This blockade intensified in May of last year after Israel took control of the Rafah border crossing, the main route between Gaza and Egypt. As a result, most Palestinians could no longer leave the enclave, and the situation remained dire for many months.

However, by late last year, small numbers of Palestinians began to leave Gaza. The process of approval for departures gained momentum in early 2025, especially after Trump’s remarks in February about the potential resettlement of Gaza’s population. This sparked new diplomatic efforts to find resettlement options for the people of Gaza, with both Jordan and Egypt rejecting Trump’s attempts to involve them in the plan.

Escalating Tensions and the Risk of Mass Displacement

Despite international rejection, Israel’s government has moved forward with plans to intensify its military offensive against Hamas in Gaza. This escalation has raised concerns that the resettlement plan could lead to the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. Senior Israeli security officials have indicated that part of the goal of this new offensive is to push Gaza’s residents into smaller areas and possibly out of the enclave altogether.

The situation in Gaza has worsened over the past year. The ongoing conflict has left much of the region in ruins, with homes and infrastructure destroyed. A blockade on humanitarian aid has led to extreme hunger and suffering among the population. Many Palestinians who have left Gaza express their intention to return once conditions improve, but the uncertainty surrounding their future remains a major concern.

Voices from Gaza: A Palestinian Perspective

One of the people who left Gaza recently is Dunya al-Amal Ismail, a Palestinian poet and writer. Ismail had been displaced internally within Gaza 11 times during the conflict before she was able to travel to France in April. She had been awarded a grant by the French government to spend a year in Paris working on a writing and teaching project. She explained that she applied for the grant in 2024, but her departure was delayed due to the war.

Despite her relocation, Ismail expressed her desire to return to Gaza once her project concludes. She emphasized that no one had asked her to sign any documents regarding permanent emigration or leaving Gaza for an extended period. She said that if she had been asked to sign such documents, she would have turned back at the Kerem Shalom crossing.

    Unclear Future for Palestinian Evacuees

As for the future of those who have left Gaza, it remains unclear whether they will be allowed to return. Many of the evacuees are hopeful they can return once the war ends and the region stabilizes. However, Israeli officials have made no promises regarding the potential return of those who have left, and the continued uncertainty leaves many Palestinians in limbo.

The situation in Gaza continues to evolve, with international pressure mounting on Israel and the U.S. to reconsider their positions. For now, the Palestinians who have been able to leave the enclave face an uncertain future, while those who remain in Gaza struggle to survive amid ongoing violence and a dire humanitarian crisis.
