The US Treasury is considering producing a $1 coin commemorating the country’s 250th anniversary that would feature Donald Trump with a raised fist and the words “fight, fight, fight.” The phrase references Trump’s declaration following a narrowly survived assassination attempt four months before he won a second term as president.

US Treasurer Brandon Beach revealed a draft design of the coin on X, stating, “No fake news here. These drafts honoring America’s 250th birthday and [Trump] are real.” The post, shared Friday, indicated that more details would follow once the partial government shutdown ends. The shutdown began after Senate Democrats refused to pass a Republican-backed funding bill, citing disagreements over healthcare and other spending priorities.

The draft coin design shows Trump’s profile with the words “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and “1776–2026” on one side. The other side depicts Trump with a clenched fist in front of an American flag, recalling the attack at a Pennsylvania rally last year in which a sniper injured Trump’s ear and wounded two others before being neutralized by the US Secret Service. This moment was one of two assassination attempts Trump faced as he campaigned successfully for a second term in 2024.

A Treasury Department spokesperson clarified to Politico that the design shared by Beach is not the final version of the $1 coin. The statement added that the draft “reflects well the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, even in the face of immense obstacles.” The US Mint’s commemorative coin program has historically generated over $500 million in surcharges, funding federal museums, monuments, and historical sites.

Trump’s popularity has declined amid controversial policy decisions. His approval rating has fallen to an average of -9.5 percent, influenced by cuts to healthcare protections and nutrition assistance for low-income Americans. The administration also implemented tariffs that preceded a rise in consumer prices.

A Pew Research poll conducted between September 22 and 28 of 3,445 US adults found that 53 percent believe Trump has worsened the national economy, while only 24 percent said he has improved it. The administration has also faced criticism for deploying US military troops to multiple cities, cutting nearly $500 million in funding for vaccines, and dealing with scandals surrounding Trump’s past association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The proposed coin has sparked debate over both its design and political messaging. Some see it as a bold celebration of resilience and national pride, while critics argue it glorifies a polarizing figure during a divisive period in US politics. Observers also note the wording “fight, fight, fight” could be interpreted as politically charged, recalling a violent event from Trump’s recent history.

Historically, the US Mint has issued commemorative coins to mark key milestones, often featuring presidents or historical figures. The proposed Trump coin would join a long line of coins celebrating the country’s semiquincentennial and other notable anniversaries. The Mint has emphasized that these coins are meant to celebrate the nation’s heritage, with proceeds supporting public institutions.

Treasury officials are reviewing the design carefully, with input from the Mint and other government bodies, to ensure that it meets commemorative standards. Once finalized, the coin could be released as part of the 2026 commemorative program, providing collectors and the public with a limited edition piece celebrating the United States’ 250th anniversary.

The Trump $1 coin reflects the intersection of politics, history, and national symbolism. While some Americans may view it as a tribute to perseverance and leadership, others see it as a contentious political statement. Regardless of public opinion, the proposal has captured national attention, highlighting how commemorative coins can become a medium for both celebration and debate in American culture.

As Treasury officials continue reviewing designs, the coin remains a draft. Final approval could come once government operations resume following the partial shutdown, with distribution expected to follow established commemorative coin programs. The outcome will mark a unique addition to the United States’ long history of celebrating its milestones with coins and medals, now intersecting with contemporary politics.
