President Donald Trump addressed the tragic shooting in New York City that took place on Monday evening. The attack left four people dead, including a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer, before the gunman took his own life.
Trump shared a message on Truth Social, saying he had been briefed on the incident. He expressed confidence in law enforcement’s efforts to uncover the reasons behind the violence. “My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Trump wrote. He added, “God Bless the New York Police Department, and God Bless New York.”
The shooting occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. ET inside the lobby of 345 Park Avenue, a busy office tower in Manhattan. The attacker, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, used an AR-15 style rifle. According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Tamura began firing immediately upon entering the building. He killed Officer Didarul Islam during the initial assault.
After the first shots, Tamura took an elevator to the 33rd floor. There, he continued shooting before turning the weapon on himself, ending the attack.
345 Park Avenue houses many offices, including the investment company Blackstone and the National Football League (NFL). Mayor Eric Adams said Tamura appeared to be targeting the NFL. The league later confirmed that one of its employees was injured and hospitalized but in stable condition.
President Trump issued his statement from Scotland, where he is spending the last day of a five-day golf trip. On Tuesday, he took part in a ceremony to open a new 18-hole golf course at his Aberdeen resort. He planned to play a full round on the new course before flying back to Washington later the same day.
This attack marks another tragic event in New York City. Authorities continue their investigation into the motive behind Tamura’s violent actions.
