The Alaska Zoo has once again transformed into a glowing winter attraction as its annual holiday light celebration returns for the season. The Alaska Zoo Lights Event brings bright colors, festive designs, and a warm holiday feeling to the zoo’s wide outdoor space, offering visitors a unique way to enjoy winter nights.

The light display stretches across nearly 30 acres of maintained zoo trails. Visitors can walk through illuminated paths that guide them across the grounds while surrounded by creative lighting displays. According to the zoo, the goal is to create a welcoming space where families, friends, and visitors of all ages can enjoy the season together.

Holiday-themed lights appear throughout the zoo in many forms. Animated displays move and sparkle along the trails, while overhead canopies of lights create glowing tunnels above visitors. Trailside lighting helps guide guests safely while adding to the festive atmosphere. One popular feature is a polar bear bench, designed as a photo spot where guests can pause and capture memories during their walk.

New additions have also arrived this year. Dinosaur silhouettes now stand alongside other animal-shaped displays. These large figures add a playful twist to the event and offer something fresh for returning visitors. Zoo staff say each silhouette takes between one and three days to install, showing the time and care put into preparing the event.

The Alaska Zoo Lights Event officially opens on December 19. From that date, the zoo will welcome visitors every night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will run through January 4, giving guests several weeks to experience the display during the holiday season and into the new year.

Cold winter temperatures are part of the Alaska experience, and the zoo has planned ways to help guests stay comfortable. A coffee shop located on the grounds will be open during the event. Visitors can stop in for warm drinks and refreshments while taking a break from walking the trails. The shop offers a cozy place to relax before heading back out to enjoy more lights.

Starting December 19, the zoo’s Discovery Center will also open during the event. The space is designed to give visitors a place to warm up indoors. It will offer simple craft activities, making it especially appealing for families with children. Zoo staff say the Discovery Center adds another layer of comfort and fun to the overall experience.

The Alaska Zoo Lights Event is supported by sponsors, which helps keep the display available to the public each year. Their support allows the zoo to expand lighting features, add new designs, and maintain safe pathways for guests during winter evenings.

Zoo officials say the event is about more than just lights. It is meant to bring people together during a time of year that can feel long and dark. By turning the zoo into a bright and welcoming space, organizers hope to lift spirits and offer a shared community experience.

Visitors are encouraged to dress warmly and wear footwear suitable for winter walking. The trails are maintained, but temperatures can drop quickly in the evening. Taking time to move slowly, enjoy the displays, and stop for warm drinks can help make the visit more comfortable.

The Alaska Zoo Lights Event has become a seasonal tradition for many residents and visitors. Each year, the displays grow and change, offering new reasons to return. With animated lights, animal silhouettes, and family-friendly spaces, the event continues to be a highlight of the winter calendar.

As the holiday season approaches, the zoo’s glowing trails offer a chance to slow down and enjoy simple moments. The Alaska Zoo Lights Event invites the community to step into a bright winter setting, celebrate the season, and create lasting memories under the lights.
