The Democratic Party has won control of both chambers of the United States Congress in the 2026 midterm elections. The result marks a major political shift in Washington and delivers a strong setback to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

Democrats secured victories in several closely watched races, including states that have traditionally supported Republican candidates. Their gains in the Senate and House of Representatives give the party control of Congress for the first time since 2023.

The election results reflect growing public concerns about the cost of living, the war with Iran and the direction of the federal government. Many voters used the midterm elections to express their dissatisfaction with the current administration. Exit polls also showed strong support for greater congressional oversight of the president.

Several Democratic victories stood out across the country. In Texas, Democrats won a Senate seat and defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott. The party also gained ground in Kansas, South Carolina, Iowa and other traditionally Republican states. These results showed that Democratic candidates were able to attract voters beyond their usual strongholds.

The outcome will change the balance of power in Washington when the new Congress begins its work in January. Democrats will gain greater influence over legislation, government spending and presidential appointments. Their control of the Senate will also allow them to challenge or block some of Trump’s nominees for senior government positions.

Democratic leaders have promised to use their new position to investigate government decisions and increase oversight of the administration. They have also said they will focus on household costs and other issues that played a major role in the election campaign.

However, the election victory does not mean Democrats can pass every proposal they support. President Trump still has the power to veto legislation, and major policy changes may require cooperation between both parties. This could lead to political disputes over spending, national security and other important issues.

Republican leaders have acknowledged the difficult result and promised to oppose Democratic proposals they believe would harm the country. Trump has also indicated that he will use his veto power against legislation he does not support.

The new political situation is expected to bring a more divided government in the final two years of Trump’s presidency. With Democrats controlling both chambers, the administration will face stronger congressional scrutiny and a more challenging path for its legislative plans.

The results also give Democrats an opportunity to rebuild their national position ahead of the 2028 presidential election. For now, the party’s main challenge will be turning its election success into policies that address voters’ concerns.
