Iran and the United States remain far from reaching an agreement to end their war, even as Qatar increases its diplomatic efforts to prevent another major escalation. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran and Washington still have significant differences over the conditions needed for a deal. Qatar has been working to bring the two sides closer by carrying messages and proposals between their representatives. The diplomatic effort has become particularly important as the conflict continues to affect regional security, energy supplies and international markets.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said both countries were reviewing proposals put forward by mediators. A Qatari team had travelled to Tehran for discussions before returning to Doha, but the negotiations were continuing. Al-Ansari said regional countries were making joint efforts to avoid an escalation and expressed hope that an agreement could still be reached. He added that mediation would continue as long as there remained a possibility of progress. The comments showed that Qatar is trying to maintain communication even though the two sides have not agreed on the main conditions.

Iran has set out several demands that it wants addressed before wider nuclear negotiations can begin. These include changes to oil sanctions, an end to the US naval blockade and the release of frozen Iranian funds. Tehran has also linked the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to progress on its conditions. The waterway is one of the world’s most important routes for oil and gas shipments, meaning that any disruption can affect energy markets far beyond the Middle East. Iran’s position therefore has both diplomatic and economic consequences.

The United States has maintained pressure on Tehran while continuing to consider diplomatic options. President Donald Trump renewed warnings about possible military action, although he also indicated that Washington was prepared to continue discussions. US officials described recent strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island as limited defensive operations targeting surface-to-air missile systems. One official said the strikes did not indicate a return to large-scale combat. The military action nevertheless increased uncertainty about whether the diplomatic process could survive further confrontation.

Iranian officials have warned that the country would respond forcefully to further attacks. A senior official said Tehran would not accept what it described as excessive American demands and that any response to military action could extend across the region and beyond. Such statements highlight the risks facing mediators as they attempt to prevent a wider conflict. Even limited military operations can create pressure for retaliation, making it harder for diplomats to keep negotiations on track.

The timing of the talks is also important because the US midterm elections have been a major political event in Washington. Both countries have been watching the election period as they assess the political environment for future decisions. The conflict has affected energy markets and raised concerns about the security of shipping routes. Oil prices have moved sharply as investors react to reports of diplomatic progress or renewed threats. A lasting agreement could reduce some of the uncertainty, while a breakdown in negotiations could increase the risk of further disruption.

Qatar has continued to present itself as a mediator capable of communicating with both sides. Its role is important because Iran and the United States have limited direct diplomatic contact during the conflict. Mediators can help clarify positions, carry proposals and identify areas where compromise may be possible. However, the main disagreements remain unresolved, and neither side has indicated that it is ready to abandon its core demands. The latest discussions therefore represent an attempt to keep diplomacy alive rather than evidence that a settlement is close.

The coming days may show whether Washington and Tehran are willing to adjust their positions. Officials briefed on the talks expected further feedback from both sides, but there was no confirmed deadline for reaching an agreement. For regional governments and international markets, the central concern remains preventing the conflict from spreading. Qatar’s mediation offers a channel for continued communication, but a durable outcome will require difficult decisions from both countries.
