A shooting in the main market square of Kraków, Poland, has left six people dead and 16 others injured. The attack took place on Saturday afternoon when a gunman opened fire in one of the city’s busiest public areas. A British citizen was among those killed, while police arrested the suspected attacker after an exchange of gunfire.
According to Polish authorities, the suspect was a 25-year-old man who allegedly used an automatic weapon during the attack. Witnesses reported gunfire in the square, prompting people nearby to seek shelter and emergency services to respond. Police officers arrived at the scene and confronted the suspect, who continued firing after being wounded.
Authorities said the suspect was wearing military-style clothing and body armour. Police arrested him and later took him to hospital for treatment and surgery. Investigators also searched his vehicle, where they reportedly found weapons and ammunition.
The attack left several people seriously injured. Six victims died, while 16 others were reported injured. Two police officers were among those hurt, with one said to be in serious condition. A number of the injured were taken to hospital for emergency treatment.
Polish officials said early findings suggested that the suspect had acted alone. Investigators were examining his background, possible motives and any links to extremist beliefs. Authorities said he appeared to hold radical far-right and ultra-nationalist views, although the full circumstances of the attack remained under investigation.
The incident prompted a major response from the country’s political leadership. Poland’s defence minister described the shooting as an act of terror, while Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed the seriousness of the incident. Investigators also reported that three close relatives of the suspect had been found dead at his home, adding another part to the inquiry.
Kraków announced a period of official mourning through Wednesday. National mourning was also scheduled for Sunday and Monday as the country remembered those who lost their lives. Security measures were increased in Warsaw and other locations following the attack.
The shooting has raised concerns about public safety in crowded areas and the threat posed by individuals who may be influenced by extremist beliefs. Kraków’s main market square is a major gathering place for residents and visitors, making the attack particularly shocking for the local community.
Authorities are continuing to examine the evidence, interview witnesses and establish the full sequence of events. The investigation will also seek to determine whether the suspect planned the attack in advance and whether anyone else was involved.
The deaths have left families and the wider community facing a difficult period of grief. As investigators work to establish the motive, Polish officials are expected to review security arrangements and provide further information about the case.
