Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has agreed to buy nuclear power for the next 20 years from Constellation Energy. This move helps Meta meet the increasing energy needs of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Many tech giants are now turning to nuclear energy for reliable and clean power as AI demands grow rapidly.

The long-term deal will supply Meta with clean electricity from Constellation Energy’s nuclear plants. Nuclear energy produces a large amount of electricity without carbon emissions. It is seen as a key part of the transition to greener energy sources, especially for companies with high electricity needs.

Meta’s AI systems require massive amounts of power to run data centers and cloud services. Traditional energy sources, like coal and gas, produce greenhouse gases. Solar and wind energy are clean but can be inconsistent. Nuclear power offers steady and reliable electricity 24/7, making it ideal for companies like Meta.

Riley Griffin, a Bloomberg News technology reporter, said this deal reflects a larger trend. “Many tech companies are investing in nuclear energy to ensure they can support their growing AI infrastructure,” Griffin said.

Other tech firms have also signed deals to buy nuclear power. This marks a shift as the tech industry aims to reduce its carbon footprint while meeting high energy demands. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, nuclear power accounts for about 20% of the United States’ electricity generation.

Meta’s deal with Constellation Energy helps secure a steady power supply that matches the company’s long-term goals for sustainability and innovation. The agreement also supports the nuclear energy sector, which has been growing to meet new industrial demands.

Experts expect AI technologies to keep expanding rapidly in the coming years. This growth will require more energy, making reliable and clean sources crucial. Nuclear energy can provide that power without the pollution linked to fossil fuels.

Meta’s 20-year commitment shows confidence in nuclear power’s role in the future energy landscape. It also highlights how AI development is shaping business decisions beyond technology alone.
