Actor Danny Masterson has lost an appeal against his rape conviction after arguing that the judge in his case was biased against Scientology. The ruling leaves his conviction in place and marks another stage in a legal case that has drawn extensive public attention. Masterson, known for his role in the television comedy That ’70s Show, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for raping two women. The appeal focused on whether concerns about the judge’s views had affected the fairness of the proceedings.

Appeals courts review legal decisions to determine whether serious errors affected the outcome of a trial. They do not usually repeat the entire process of hearing evidence from the beginning. Instead, judges examine the arguments raised by the defence, the relevant law and the record of the original proceedings. An appeal may lead to a new trial or other remedy if the court finds a significant legal problem, but a conviction remains in place when the challenge fails.

Masterson’s defence argued that the trial judge’s alleged bias against Scientology had affected how the case was handled. The court rejected the challenge, meaning that the conviction and sentence remain in force. The decision highlights the high threshold that appeals must meet when they claim that a judge’s conduct or views made a trial unfair. Courts must examine such claims carefully because the right to a fair hearing is a central part of the justice system.

The case involved allegations of sexual assault by two women who, like Masterson, had connections to Scientology. The proceedings attracted attention because of the seriousness of the charges and the public profile of the actor. Cases involving well-known people can bring wider scrutiny to the treatment of complainants, the use of evidence and the ability of courts to reach decisions without outside pressure.

Sexual assault cases often involve difficult questions about testimony, credibility and the circumstances in which alleged offences occurred. Courts must assess evidence according to legal standards rather than public opinion. At the same time, complainants may face personal and social pressures when reporting abuse, particularly when the accused person has influence or a large public following. The legal process is intended to provide a structured way to test claims and reach a verdict.

The appeal ruling does not erase the wider debate surrounding the case. Supporters of due process stress that every defendant must have access to legal representation and a fair hearing. Advocates for survivors emphasise the importance of taking allegations seriously and ensuring that complainants are treated with dignity. These principles are not opposites: a justice system must protect the rights of defendants while allowing evidence to be examined and decisions to be made independently.

The case also demonstrates how celebrity can shape public discussion of criminal proceedings. Public attention may encourage people to learn about court processes, but it can also lead to speculation that goes beyond the evidence. Legal outcomes should be understood through the judgments and records of the case rather than social media claims or assumptions about a person’s reputation.

With the appeal rejected, Masterson’s conviction remains in place. The ruling closes this particular challenge, although legal cases can sometimes involve further procedures depending on the law and circumstances. The broader importance of the case lies in the court’s role in reviewing claims of unfairness and maintaining public confidence in the justice system. A fair process depends on evidence, established legal standards and decisions made without improper influence.
