Taiwan’s defense minister says Washington’s commitment to Taiwan’s security has not changed, even as a possible $14 billion US arms package remains under review. The issue is important for Taiwan’s defense planning and for relations between Washington and Beijing. Defense Minister Wellington Koo said on October 6, 2026, that Taiwan had not received information about plans to divide the proposed arms sale into smaller packages.

Reports had suggested that Washington could split the deal into several parts. Such a move could make the sale easier to approve while reducing the political pressure it could create with China. Beijing strongly opposes US arms sales to Taiwan, while Taiwan rejects China’s territorial claim and says it must be able to defend itself.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly demanded that Washington stop supplying weapons to the island. The United States does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but it remains the island’s most important international security partner. US law requires Washington to provide Taiwan with the means to maintain its self defense, and that support has included aircraft, missiles, radar systems and other military equipment.

The possible new package is therefore closely watched in Taipei. Koo said the United States had repeatedly told Taiwan that its commitment to helping the island improve its defense capabilities had not changed. Taiwan and the United States also maintain close military contacts, including discussions about military preparation and the transformation of Taiwan’s armed forces.

The issue is especially sensitive because Washington is also trying to maintain stable relations with China. President Donald Trump has delayed approval of the new arms package while seeking to preserve a trade relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump previously described the package as an important negotiating tool, showing how Taiwan’s defense needs can become linked to wider US China trade and political issues.

China has strong objections to any US military support for Taiwan and sees such sales as interference in what it considers an internal Chinese matter. Washington takes a different position, saying it wants peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait while helping Taiwan maintain the ability to defend itself. The disagreement creates a difficult balance between Taiwan’s security concerns and efforts to avoid greater tensions between Washington and Beijing.

Taiwan’s leaders are watching the review process closely because they want faster access to weapons while viewing China’s military power as a growing threat. The United States, meanwhile, wants to support Taiwan without creating unnecessary escalation with Beijing. The timing and size of any future arms package could therefore carry importance beyond the equipment itself.

Taiwan’s foreign minister Lin Chia-lung is also in the United States this week, while former President Tsai Ing-wen is visiting as well. The visits show the depth of unofficial relations between Taipei and Washington. A US State Department spokesperson said the international community benefits from engagement with Taiwan because of its technology sector and democratic system, while China’s embassy in Washington again opposed official interactions between Taiwan and the United States.

The arms issue also has an economic side. Taiwan is a major producer of advanced computer chips, and its technology industry is important to global supply chains. A serious military crisis around Taiwan could therefore affect technology markets around the world, making the island important to both regional security and the global economy.

The October 6 development shows that the proposed arms deal remains uncertain. Taiwan says it has not been told that the package will be divided into smaller parts, and officials in Taipei are waiting for Washington to complete its review. The final decision will matter not only to Taiwan’s defense plans but also to the already sensitive relationship between the United States and China.

Any new arms sale is likely to be watched closely in Beijing, Taipei and Washington. The decision will also show how the United States balances its security relationship with Taiwan against its broader efforts to manage relations with China, while Taiwan continues to seek greater protection for its territory and critical industries.
