China has stepped up work on a dam in Pakistan after India threatened to stop water supply to the country. The Chinese state media outlet, CCTV, reported that China is speeding up the Mohmand Dam project to help Pakistan secure its water future.

This move comes shortly after India paused the Indus Waters Treaty, a water-sharing agreement signed under the World Bank’s guidance. India made the decision after the recent incident in Pahalgam. In response, China has taken what experts are calling a counter-action by moving faster on the dam project.

The Mohmand Dam is being built in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It is a part of the Mohmand Hydro Power Project. The project is being handled by China Energy Engineering Corporation, a state-owned Chinese firm. The company started working on the dam back in 2019. Now, it says the concrete filling of the dam has begun. This is a major step in making sure the project is finished quickly.

The Mohmand Dam is a multi-purpose project. It will help with power production, flood control, irrigation, and water supply. Once finished, the dam is expected to produce 800 megawatts of hydroelectric power. It will also supply 300 million gallons of water every day to Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

This dam is one of many joint projects between China and Pakistan. The two countries are working together in areas like farming, industry, and improving people’s lives. Most of these efforts are a part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, or CPEC.

CPEC is a huge plan that links China’s economy with Pakistan’s. It includes roads, railways, and energy projects. The goal is to boost trade and help both countries grow. Many of the projects under CPEC are funded and managed by China.

Another key example of their teamwork is the Diamer-Bhasha Dam. This project is often compared to China’s famous Three Gorges Dam. It is one of the biggest power projects in Pakistan and shows how deep the China-Pakistan partnership has become.

The Mohmand Dam project is seen as a clear message. It shows that China is ready to support Pakistan during tough times. It also shows how strong the two countries’ friendship is when facing outside pressure, especially from India.

China’s quick action comes at a time when water security is a major issue for Pakistan. The country depends on rivers that start in India. So, India’s threat to cut off water has raised alarms. With growing populations and climate change, water supply is becoming more and more important.

Experts say China’s help may protect Pakistan from future risks. At the same time, it may also give China a stronger hold in the region. Both countries are already linked through trade and security ties. This dam project adds another layer to that bond.

As the Mohmand Dam nears completion, it may bring many benefits to Pakistan. But it may also shift the balance of power in South Asia. For now, the world is watching closely as China and Pakistan work side by side—building not just dams, but a long-term alliance.
