Lei Jun is a name that has become synonymous with innovation and disruption in China’s technology landscape. As the founder, chairman, and CEO of Xiaomi Corporation, Lei Jun has led one of the most successful tech companies in the world. From smartphones to smart home devices and now electric vehicles, Lei Jun has consistently pushed boundaries and transformed markets through smart strategy and forward-thinking leadership.

Born on December 16, 1969, in Xiantao, Hubei Province, Lei Jun showed signs of exceptional intelligence from a young age. He attended Wuhan University, one of China’s top institutions, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Remarkably, he completed the four-year program in just two years. This early academic success foreshadowed the ambitious path he would take in the world of business and technology.

Lei Jun’s professional journey began in 1992 when he joined Kingsoft, a Chinese software company. He rose through the ranks quickly and became CEO in 1998. During his time there, he helped the company grow significantly, eventually leading Kingsoft to a public listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2007. After stepping down as CEO, Lei Jun turned to angel investing. He backed several successful startups, including UCWeb and YY, building a reputation as a savvy investor with a keen eye for promising technology ventures.

In 2010, Lei Jun founded Xiaomi Corporation alongside seven co-founders. The company started by developing MIUI, a user-friendly Android-based operating system. It then entered the smartphone market with a unique strategy: offering high-spec devices at affordable prices. This approach quickly gained popularity in China and later worldwide. Xiaomi became known not only for its smartphones but also for its broad ecosystem of smart products, from air purifiers to electric scooters, all connected through its AIoT platform.

Lei Jun’s leadership style has often been compared to that of Steve Jobs. He is known for his simple attire, often appearing in black shirts and jeans during product launches. His presentations are energetic and direct, helping build a strong emotional connection with consumers. He emphasizes user feedback, innovation, and speed, which has helped Xiaomi stay competitive in a rapidly changing market.

In 2021, Lei Jun announced Xiaomi’s entry into the electric vehicle sector with a bold promise to invest $10 billion over a decade. This move was seen as part of a broader trend among tech companies in China to enter the mobility space. By 2023, Xiaomi had unveiled its first electric sedan, the SU7. In 2025, the company launched the YU7 electric SUV, which received an overwhelming response—289,000 pre-orders were placed within just one hour of launch. This success marked a new chapter in Lei Jun’s vision for Xiaomi and highlighted his ability to generate excitement across different sectors.

Lei Jun’s net worth is currently estimated between $10 to $15 billion, much of which comes from his stakes in Xiaomi and his past investments. He is regularly featured on Forbes and Fortune lists for his impact in technology and business. He has also received numerous awards, including being named one of MIT Technology Review’s Top 100 Innovators and one of China’s Top Ten IT Figures.

He remains highly active on social media, particularly on Weibo, where he shares company updates, new product information, and personal reflections. This direct engagement with the public has helped build a loyal fanbase and maintain Xiaomi’s strong brand identity.

Lei Jun’s journey from a small town in Hubei to the global tech stage is a testament to vision, determination, and strategic thinking. Under his leadership, Xiaomi continues to expand into new areas, making smart technology more accessible while positioning itself at the center of China’s transformation into a global innovation powerhouse.
